Blizzard skates to 5-3 win over Steel

NEW ULM — The Alexandria Blizzard broke a 2-2 tie in the second period with two goals and then added a power-play goal goal early in the third period and went on to top the New Ulm Steel 5-3 Friday night in an NA3HL game at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Tommy Michelsen, Zach Millaette and James Spaargaren scored goals for the Steel, now 1-6 in the West Division.

Jacob Zowin had two assists with Nate Looft and Millaette each adding assists.

Steel goalie Griffin Foster recorded 30 of 35 saves.

Sean Kenny had two goals for the Blizzard.

The Blizzard jumped to a 1-0 lead when Austin McNeil beat Foster with a shot that banked off of the pipe on Foster’s stick side.

The Steel, who host Willmar next Saturday, knotted the game when Tommy Michelsen beat Blizzard goalie Bailey Rosch at the 18:23 mark.

Collin Tushie then broke that tie when he beat Foster on a breakaway score at the 1:33 mark before Zach Millaette scored on a power play goal to knot the game at 2-2 at 8:26 of the second period.

But Alexandria scored twice in a span of less than two minutes on goals from Kenny and Cole Klingbell for a 4-2 lead after two periods.

It was a lead that New Ulm could not recover from as Kenny salted the game away with a power play goal at the 4:19 mark of the third period.

James Spaaragaren’s shorthanded score at 8:01 mark cut the lead to 5-3.

Alexandria outshot New Ulm 35-29 in the game.
