Willmar skates past New Ulm Steel

NEW ULM — Willmar scored a pair of first-period goals on Friday night as the WarHawks won 4-1 in the NA3HL season-opener at New Ulm Civic Center.

Willmar outshot New Ulm 20-14 for the game.

New Ulm’s Nick Wieben opened the scoring at the 2:42 mark when he scored a short-handed goal on an assist From Brandon Swenson and Nate Looft.

The WarHawks then tied the game less than four minutes later when Jack Willis scored off an assist from Spencer Platt at 6:06. Willmar’s Ethan Light gave the WarHawks the 2-1 lead at 10:30 thanks to an assist from Willis.

Tyler Corbid scored Willmar’s lone goal in the second period to put the WarHawks ahead 3-1 at that point.

The WarHawks added a late goal in the third period for the final margin.

Zac Hattan had 16 saves for New Ulm and Luke Weberg stopped 13 shots for the WarHawks.

New Ulm hosts Alexandria on Saturday night.
