Eagles earn first victory of season with 5-2 win over River Valley

NEW ULM — New Ulm earned its first win of the season with a 5-2 victory over River Valley on Friday in a Big South girls’ tennis match.

“It was a great match and it was super-competitive,” Eagle head coach Pete Engeldinger said.

Makiah Otto won at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1 over River Valley’s Brooklyn Moldan. Kaydince Thoms downed New Ulm’s Abby Hietala at No. 2 singles 6-2, 7-6, 7-5, 10-6. The Eagles Malia Emerson beat Kiera Lafferty at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-2. Lydia King defeated RV’s Taylor Berner at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-2.

“I stayed ahead,” King said. “We had some nice rallies going and we kept going back and forth.”

Emily Guggisberg and Maddie O’Connor of New Ulm downed Megan Stevens and Presley Doctkter at No. 1 doubles 6-0, 6-1. McKenna Simpson and Gracelyn Nesje of New Ulm defeated Sydne Wahl and Erika Lozano at No. 2 doubles 3-6, 6-3, 10-8. Maya Nelson and Courtney Runckof River Valley downed Marissa Tedesco and Alex Vigil of New Ulm at No. 3 doubles 6-2, 6-2.

New Ulm (1-6) will play at River Valley on Monday.
