Walks hurt as VFW Gold falls to Mankato West in opener

NEW ULM — The New Ulm VFW Gold pitching staff struggled in their first game of the season, issuing 14 walks and another hit-batter as Mankato West ran away with a 9-3 victory on Tuesday at Mueller Park.

Jaydon Drill took the loss for New Ulm. He lasted 1 2/3 innings and he allowed eight walks and one hit. He allowed five runs. Jace Schaefer went 3 1/3 innings in relief and he allowed three hits and he struck out four. He allowed four runs.

West got on the board early thanks to five walks and a hit-by-pitch in the top of the first. Drill walked the first four batters he faced as West jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

West then added to the lead in the top of the second inning, taking advantage of three more walks from Drill and an RBI single from Riley Bersaw to give West a 5-0 advantage at that point.

Tanner Shumski drove in two runs in the top of the third to put West ahead 7-0, and Louis Mages hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning for West’s final two runs of the game.

New Ulm scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 9-2. Jadon Miller contributed an RBI single. Sam Knowles later scored in the bottom of the seventh inning after he led off with a double and scored on an error.

New Ulm will get back into action on Tuesday when it travels to Willmar.
