St.  Mary’s knocks off BOLD in 2A

ST. PETER — A 13-0 run to start the second half was the difference as No. 1-seeded Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s advanced in the Section 2A playoffs with a 58-44 victory over No. 4-seeded BOLD at St. Peter High School.

The win means the Knights (24-2) will play in the North Subsection championship game at 6 p.m. on Monday at Gustavus Adolphus College. It was the 14th straight victory for the Knights.

Madison Mathiowetz led all scorers with 25 points. Mathiowetz became the school’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing her uncle Sean Mathiowetz’s career mark of 1,838. Madison now has 1,858 points and she’s only a sophomore.

Sydney Windschitl scored 12 points and Liz Schwint finished with 6 points.

Brenna Weis led the Warriors with 13 points. Makayla Snow and Leslie Snow each finished with 11 points for BOLD, which ended the season 18-10.

The Knights quickly turned their halftime lead into double digits in the second half and never looked back.

The Warriors took a 5-0 lead to start the game, but St. Mary’s soon was up 11-5. After another 5-0 BOLD run, the teams traded the lead four different times the rest of the first half.

With BOLD up 22-19, Sydney Windschitl hit a 3-pointer to tie the game. Mathiowetz then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Knights a 25-24 lead.

The St. Mary’s defense took over in the second half and stretched the lead to 50-40. Later, a layup from Windschitl upped St. Mary’s lead to 57-40 and the Knights held on, ending BOLD’s season.
