New Ulm eliminates Windom in 3A action

NEW ULM — In the first period of their Section 3A playoff game against Windom, New Ulm fired 20 shots at Windom goalie Dan Stubbe but managed to slip just one puck by him — that coming off of the stick of Nolan Drill at the 10:33 mark.

But New Ulm had more success in the second period as 14 shots resulted in five more goals as New Ulm downed Windom 9-2 Thursday at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Glavine Schugel and A.J. Arneson each scored twice for New Ulm with Braxten Hoffmann, Cade Bushard, Kedar Schmitz and Teagan Kamm each adding a goal.

Hoffmann, Arneson and Bushard each added two assists. Arneson, Bushard, Schugel, Kamm, Drill, Kyden Wenisch and Teddy Giefer each adding a helper.

New Ulm goalie Kyle Esser stopped 23 of 25 Windom shots.

The Eagles, now 18-6-1, face off against Litchfield-Dassel/Cokato Saturday at 8 p.m. at Don Roberts Ice Arena at Gustavus Adolphus in a 3A semi-final contest.

“We stressed in practice that we wanted to put shots on net tonight,” New Ulm coach Ryan Neuman said as his team ended up with 52 shots on Stubbe for the game. “We stressed catch-release in practice, change our lanes quick so we can pucks through to the net.”

New Ulm wasted little time in getting a comfortable lead in the second period.

Just 15 seconds into the second period, Hoffmann took a pretty pass from Schugel to bury the puck past Stubbe for a 2-0 lead.

Windom cut the lead to 2-1 on an Alex Espenson goal at the 3:19 mark. But New Ulm responded with goals from Schugel and Bushard for a 4-1 lead at the 8:25 mark. Arneson’s power play score made it 5-1 at the 10:55 mark before Schmitz upped the lead to 6-1 on a shorthanded score at the 13:12 mark of the second period.

“We shot a lot of pucks into his glove and his pads were like trampolines so we banked them off his pads and buried in rebounds,” Neuman said. “That is what we did in the second period.”

Windom cut the lead to 6-2 early in the third period but Kamm scored New Ulm’s second shorthanded goal for a 7-2 lead at the 5:48 mark.

“We did not have a lot of shorthanded goals in the regular season but anytime you can get a shorthanded goal it is a boost for the team,” Neuman said.

Schugel and Arneson completed the scoring with Arneson’s goal coming with six seconds in the game.

“We lost to Litchfield earlier in the year so we will go back and watch film of that game,” Neuman said.
