NEW ULM — The New Ulm Area wrestling team ended Friday going 2-1 in a quadrangular at New Ulm High School, defeating Fulda/Murray County Central 60-18 and Windom/Mountain Lake 39-36 before falling to Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie 45-36.

It was also senior night, and the Eagles got three wins apiece from all of their seniors (Carter Brandes, Jackson Bode, John Mehlhop, Colby Wenninger).

“I want to give hats off to the seniors tonight,” NUA head coach John Rieser said. “Last matches are always senior night, and all four seniors won all three of their matches, so hats off to them for bringing it tonight.”

The Eagles started the evening off with plenty of intensity against Fulda/MCC, picking up eight pins during the 60-18 routing. Getting pins for the Eagles during during that win over Fulda/MCC was Winsten Nienhaus (106), Logan Lee (113), Isaiah Rieser (126), Bode (145), Cole Ranweiler (170), Mehlhop (182), Caleb Arndt (195) and Julian Hernandez (220).

Ranweiler got the quickest pin against Fulda/MCC after getting a quick reversal that led to a pin over Christian Kuball in 1:15.

The Eagles trailed 12-0 against Windom/ML in their second dual of the night before Brandes got them on the board with a 20-second pin over Matthew Ekstrom at 120, the fastest pin of the night for NUA. With the Eagles down 30-6, Bode got a hard-earned 8-6 decision over Trenton Renquist to have NUA down 30-9.

After a few forfeits and a pin by Mehlhop in 2:28 over Keith Swenson, NUA trailed 36-27, making the final two matches of the night against the Cobras hold much more importance. In the opening minute of the 220-pound matchup between Hernandez and Alex Altman, Hernandez was able to roll Altman to his back and secure a pin in 53 seconds, putting NUA down just 36-33.

Then in a must-win matchup for NUA at heavyweight, Wenninger reversed Eli Mutz in the second period to go up 8-1 before ending the match with a pin in 2:59, giving NUA the 3-point win.

Against GSL/LP in NUA’s final dual of the night, the Eagles opened with a trio of pins by Nienhaus, Lee and Brandes to go up 18-0 before GSL/LP tied it up after three wins in a row of its own. NUA kept it close from there out with a pin each by Bode and Mehlhop, but GSL/LP picked up wins at 195 and 220 to put things out of reach. Wenninger ended the night with a win by forfeit.

The Eagles begin the Section 3AA Team Tournament at 6 p.m. Thursday in Sherburn when they take on Worthington.

“This is kind of what we work for all year, this time of the year,” coach Rieser said. “We’ve just got to put out game face on and wrestle as hard as we can come section time.”
