NEW ULM — The Minnesota Valley Lutheran girls’ basketball team held New Ulm Cathedral to 13 first half points before limiting them to only 12 points in the second half as the Chargers raced by the Greyhounds 73-25 Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference game.

Emma Nelson and Abby Nelson each scored 12 points for MVL (17-5, 13-2) with Abbie Riederer collecting 11 points.

Brianna Schumacher led Cathedral (2-18, 1-14) with 8 points. Emily Schommer and Maggie Fliszar each contributed 5 points.

“I thought that the girls played well,” Chargers’ coach Rollin Timm said. “We took care of the ball — we moved it up the court — and we played good defense.”

Cathedral coach Dave Wilfahrt said that his girls played hard and gave it all they had.

“You play with what you have,” he said.

The Chargers jumped out to leads of 10-2 and would hold double-digit leads most of the first half.

The Greyhounds pulled to within 20-11 on a Schommer basket before MVL outscored the Greyhounds 21-2 to take a comfortable 41-13 lead into half-time.

The Chargers opened up the second half allowing the Greyhounds only two points in the first seven minutes and scoring 20 of their own for a 61-17 lead as five different Chargers — Emma Nelson, Mikayala Bendix, Naomi Anderson, Ella Schlei and Samantha Dalueg — hit baskets.

“We got got a lot of second and third shots tonight,” Timm said. “And I was very happy with our defense tonight. We have talked about how we need to step it up on the defensive end because we had been giving up too many points. They did a nice job.”
