Area roundup: MVL girls down Sleepy Eye, Nicollet tops Cathedral

MVL 72, Sleepy Eye 55

SLEEPY EYE — Minnesota Valley Lutheran downed Sleepy Eye 72-55 on Thursday night in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

The Chargers were led by Abbie Riederer’s 19 points and five steals, Emma Nelson’s 15 points and 12 rebounds and Maddie Pearson’s 14 points and four assists. Also for MVL, Samantha Dalueg and Abby Nelson each grabbed 10 rebounds.

For the Indians, Brittney Dittbenner led with 15 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Kadence Hesse had 12 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Kaydince Thoms had 10 points for Sleepy Eye.

MVL (16-3, 11-1) hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Friday night, while Sleepy Eye (12-7, 6-7) is at New Ulm Cathedral Monday night.

Nicollet 58, Cathedral 53

NICOLLET — Nicollet/Loyola held off New Ulm Cathedral 58-53 on Thursday night in a nonconference girls’ basketball game.

The Raiders got 16 points apiece from Marah Hulke, Josi Hansen and Hayley Selby to lead the way. Hulke also had seven rebounds and four assists, while Selby had 14 rebounds. Sam Rist added 6 points and nine rebounds for the Raiders.

Lily Franta scored 22 points to lead the Greyhounds, while Jenna Hotovec had 12 points and Maggie Fliszar added 10 points.

Cathedral (2-15) is at Wabasso for a 7:30 p.m. Tomahawk Conference game Friday, while Nicollet/Loyola (4-11) is at Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther for a 7:15 p.m. Valley Conference game Friday.

BLHS 63, KMS 45

HECTOR — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart downed Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 63-45 on Thursday night in nonconference girls’ basketball action.

Sara Kottke had 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Mustangs, while Rachel Kottke had 12 points, five assists and four steals. Lily Dean added 11 points for BLHS.

Minneota takes 2 from Wabasso/RRC

DAWSON — Minneota downed Wabasso/Red Rock Central 51-19 and 45-25 at the Dawson Double Dual on Thursday night.

Josh Hesse (160) and Damian Osland (170) each got a pair of pins to lead Wabasso/RRC.

BLUE EARTH — Blue Earth Area defeated New Ulm 77-73 in double overtime on Thursday night.

New Ulm was led by Reece Melby’s 37 points and Charlie Osborne’s 17 points. Cole Rhode had 12 rebounds for New Ulm.
