NEW ULM — New Ulm Cathedral had a tough time finding a rhythm on offense early on in Monday night’s nonconference boys’ basketball game against Norwood-Young America.

Fortunately for the Greyhounds (16-1), their defense held strong throughout the game and their offense caught on after that on the way to a 72-42 win.

James Gillis led Cathedral with 19 points and four assists, while Jon Zinniel had 15 points, six rebounds, six assists and two blocks. Chris Knowles also had 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists, four steals and two blocks for Cathedral, while Jon Adema came off the bench in the first half and connected on four 3-pointers for 12 points.

NYA (3-14) was led by Brady Will and Jerid Fahey, who each had 12 points.

A 3 by Knowles gave the Greyhounds their first double-digit lead of the game, 12-2, with 9:24 left in the first half. That 3 was the beginning of a stronger scoring effort from the Greyhounds as James Gillis knocked down a pair of 3s minutes later. Later in the half, Adema came in off the bench and hit four consecutive 3s to put Cathedral ahead 41-16 with less than two minutes left in the half.

Knowles beat the buzzer on a 3 to give the Greyhounds a 44-18 halftime lead.

Adema, who also hit seven 3s in the JV game earlier, carried a hot hand into the varsity game and helped give the Greyhounds a nice momentum boost heading into the second half.

“He shot the ball with a lot of confidence tonight and that’s what we need him to do,” Cathedral head coach Alan Woitas said of Adema. “He has the capability to be a really good shooter and he’s continuing to get more confidence the more experience he gets.”

Minutes into the second half, the Greyhounds got an 8-0 run to lead 60-25, getting a corner 3 by Zinniel, a 3 by James Gillis and a bucket inside by Matt Gillis. Another bucket later on by Matt Gillis gave Cathedral its largest lead of the night, 65-27.

“Offensively we started a little slow and then defensively we just picked our energy and were able to create some turnovers, get some easy baskets,” Woitas said. “And once you see the ball go through the hoop, your confidence builds. And we did a great job of finding some guys that got hot. Jon Adema had a great first half, and his teammates really made some nice passes to get him in good spots to make shots.”

Cathedral next travels to Morgan to take on Cedar Mountain Tuesday night in a Tomahawk Conference game.
