Helget, Scheid score 2 goals as Eagles defeat Luverne

NEW ULM — Jayda Helget and Molly Scheid each scored two goals and Helget added assists on both of Scheid’s goals as the New Ulm Eagles girls’ hockey team all but wrapped up the Big South Conference championship as they clipped Luverne 4-1 Thursday at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Scheid’s two goals now give her a team-leading 20 goals on the season. Helget now has 13 goals and an 14 assists on the year, tied with McKenna Strong for the lead.

Evie Sellner and Ally Steffensmeier each had an assist.

New Ulm goalie Ava Brennan did not have a particularly busy night as she stopped 15 out of 16 Luverne shots.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, New Ulm fired 45 shots at Cardinals’ goalie Mallory Vonteresch.

The win moves New Ulm to 11-0 in conference play and 15-7 overall while Luverne falls two games behind New Ulm in second place at 9-2.

“I felt that we did not have the greatest first period — we were kind of slow out of the gates,” New Ulm coach Kirstin Faber said. “We were losing a lot of puck races but we turned it around in the second and third periods.”

After a scoreless first period, it would be the Cardinals who would strike first.

Luverne got their only hurrah of the game in the first period when Rylee Gee beat Brennan at the 1:12 mark on a breakaway goal.

But that lead would last just over three minutes before Jayda Helget scored off assists from Scheid and Sellner at the 4:56 mark.

Just under six minutes later, Helget recorded her second goal of the game on a power play for a 2-1 lead at the 10:06 mark of the second period.

It was a period where New Ulm outshot the Cardinals 22-5.

“The last time we played Luverne it was a 2-1 and we put a lot of shots on goal,” Faber said.

Scheid’s first goal of the game at the 13:13 mark of the third period on a feed from Jayda Helget moved New Ulm into a 3-1 lead.

“They (Scheid and Jayda Helget) worked well together tonight,” Faber said. “They found each other a lot more tonight than they have probably throughout the season.”

The Eagles, who host Windom Monday, closed out the scoring when Scheid scored her second goal on an empty net shot with 32 seconds left in the game.
