NEW ULM — The New Ulm Area wrestling team had a tough Thursday night at New Ulm High School, suffering a pair of Big South Conference dual defeats to Fairmont/Martin County West 70-6 and St. Peter 49-30.

NUA had its hands full to start the night against the No-2 ranked Fairmont/MCW. The Red Bulls, boasting nine ranked wrestlers, picked up win after win before heavyweight Colby Wenninger gained the first win of the night for the Eagles by pinning Everardo Hernandez in 1:38.

Wenninger first took Everardo Hernandez down and gained control of the back midway through the first period before securing the pin with 22 seconds left in the period.

In the second dual of the night for NUA, Carter Brandes (120) got the Eagles’ second victory of the night after cradling St. Peter’s Amir Loredo Hollon for the pin in 2:52.

The Eagles didn’t pick up another win until Cole Ranweiler, now the No. 10-ranked Class AA wrestler at 170, pinned Kole Guth in 3:13 after a busy first period that had Ranweiler up 12-5. At 195, Caleb Arndt got an early takedown and pinned Connor Travaille in 42 seconds for another NUA win.

NUA’s Julian Hernandez (220) and Wenninger then each picked up a win by forfeit for the final score against the Saints.
