Area Roundup: New Ulm gymnasts slip by St. Peter

ST. PETER — The New Ulm gymnastics team stayed perfect on the season after defeating St. Peter 136.575-132.425 on Friday night in a Big South Conference meet at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Kayla Goblirsch led the Eagles (7-0) by finishing first in every event. She took first in all-around (36.4), first in the vault (9.3), first on bars (8.65), first on the beam (9.225) and first on floor (9.225).

Also for New Ulm, Ella Freiderich finished second all-around (33.85), second on floor (9.1), fourth in the vault (8.5), fourth on bars (8.15) and fifth on the beam (8.1). Wrapping up the top scores for New Ulm was Madison Miller, who was second on the beam (8.825) and fifth on bars (7.95), Emily Guggisberg, who was third in the vault (8.525) and fifth on floor (8.6) and Anna Schwartz, who was fourth on floor (8.675).

New Ulm hosts Marshall at 6 p.m. on Monday.

Boys’ basketball

MVL 83, GFW 64

WINTHROP — Minnesota Valley Lutheran took down Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 83-64 on Thursday night in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game.

Jace Marotz led the Chargers with 25 points, six rebounds and four steals, while Kyreis Harrison added 21 points and five steals. Mason Cox also had a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double for MVL, while Dunwa Omot had 10 points and three steals.

Damian Hopp led GFW with 25 points, while Ethan Schwarzrock added 9 points.

MVL (15-1, 9-1) is at St. Clair Friday night, while GFW (3-12, 2-8) hosts St. Clair on Monday night.

TMB 86, St. Mary’s 81, OT

SLEEPY EYE — Tracy-Milroy-Balaton defeated Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s in a nonconference girls’ basketball game on Thursday.

For St. Mary’s, Carson Domeier scored 24 points and Trent Steffensmeier finished with 16.

Nicollet 80, St. Clair 78

NICOLLET — Nicollet remained perfect in the Valley Conference with an 80-78 win in boys’ basketball action.

The Raiders (10-3, 5-0) were led by Shane Stevensen’s 26 points and eight rebounds, while Riley Hulke had 19 points and 10 assists. Also for the Raiders, Colton Thomsen had 13 points and nine rebounds, while Jon Mans added 12 points and Ben Radke had 4 points and 13 rebounds.

Nicollet hosts Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton at 7:15 p.m. Friday night.

Madelia 60, Cleveland 58

MADELIA – Madelia came from behind to take down Cleveland 60-58 on Thursday night in a Valley Conference boys’ basketball game.

The Blackhawks trailed 32-24 at halftime.

With around 40 seconds left to play, Kurt Lugo sank a pair of free throws to tie the game up at 58 before Ja’Sean Glover got the game-winning steal and layup with 21 seconds left.

Lugo led Madelia with 22 points, five rebounds and two assists, while Glover had 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Glover was held to 4 points in the first half.

Madelia (6-8, 4-3) is at St. Clair on Tuesday.

Girls’ basketball

Springfield 62,

Cathedral 48

NEW ULM — Springfield held off New Ulm Cathedral 62-48 on Thursday night in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game at Cathedral High School.

Springfield was led by Sydney Hauger’s 21 points, while Courtney Wendt added 15 points.

For the Greyhounds, Lily Franta had 21 points, Emily Schommer had 14 points and Jenna Hotovec added 8 points.

Cathedral (2-13, 1-10) hosts Cedar Mountain at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for conference action, while Springfield (13-3, 8-2) hosts BOLD in nonconference play at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

RRC 73,

Cedar Mountain 39

MORGAN — Red Rock Central topped Cedar Mountain 73-39 on Thursday night in girls’ basketball action.

Bella Harmoning led the Cougars with 9 points.

RRC was led by Nicole Schroepfer and Karli Arkell, who each had 18 points.

Cedar Mountain is at New Ulm Cathedral on Tuesday night.
