MLC women cold in loss to UMM

NEW ULM — The Martin Luther College women’s basketball team struggled to shoot the ball in a 77-48 loss to Minnesota Morris on Wednesday in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action.

The Cougars made five 3-point field goals in the first quarter to take a 27-12 lead and then held MLC to 1-of-16 shooting in the second quarter as they built a 43-15 halftime edge the Knights could not recover from.

The Knights shot better in the second half (36.4 %), but finished the game shooting 28.8% overall and 22.2% from beyond the 3-point arc.

UMM’s length was difficult for the Knights to overcome as the Cougars blocked 12 shots to go with 10 steals.

Emily Witkowski was the lone MLC player in double figures with 10 points. Kortney Behnke scored 7 points to go with six rebounds and three steals.

MLC fell to 1-15 on the season and 1-7 in UMAC play in defeat. UMM improved to 9-7 overall and 5-3 in league play with the win.

The Knights will return to action at 4:45 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to St. Scholastica for a game.
