Prep roundup: Mathiowetz leads St. Mary’s girls past Cedar Mountain, BLHS easily defeats Wabasso girls

SLEEPY EYE — Madison Mathiowetz scored 23 points, had six assists and six steals as Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Cedar Mountain in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game on Tuesday.

Reagan Severson scored 16 points, had eight rebounds and six assists for the Knights and Sydney Windschitl had 16 points, four assists and seven steals.

Megan Sandgren led Cedar Mountain with 9 points.

St. Mary’s (14-2, 8-2) is at Wabasso on Friday.

BLHS 90, Wabasso 63

WABASSO — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart defeated Wabasso 90-63 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

BLHS was led by Sara Kottke with 19 points, nine rebounds, three assists and four blocks. Kristi Kottke had 19 points and seven steals, Allison Milbrandt finished with 15 points and Maddy Wulkan finished with 10 points.

Wabasso’s Kelsey Frank and Bella Brand each scored 14 points and Ally Fenger scored 11 points.

BLHS plays at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Sleepy Eye. Wabasso hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s at 6 p.m. on Friday.

GFW 51, Cathedral 41

WINTHROP — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop defeated New Ulm Cathedral 51-41 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

GFW was led by Brynn Busse with 16 points and Abby Heimkes with 10 points.

For Cathedral, Emily Schommer scored 17 points and Lily Franta scored 10 points.

Cathedral (2-12, 1-9) hosts Springfield at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. GFW plays at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at Le Sueur/Henderson.

Boys’ basketball

MVL 77, Sleepy Eye 36

SLEEPY EYE — Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated Sleepy Eye 77-36 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game.

MVL was led by Dunwa Omot with 17 points, four rebounds, one assist and six steals. Kyreis Harrison finished with 16 points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals and Jace Marotz finished with 12 points, six rebounds and one block.

Sleepy Eye’s Kegan Heiderscheidt had 11 points and nine rebounds and Matt Sellner had 9 points.

MVL plays at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop. Sleepy Eye plays at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart.

Springfield 89,

Redwood Valley 82

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield defeated Redwood Valley 89-82 on Tuesday in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.

Springfield’s leading scorers were Decker Scheffler with 28 points, Mitchell Buerkle with 25 points, Mason Leonard with 12 points and Nolan Hovland with 11 points.

Springfield (14-1) hosts New Ulm Cathedral at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Madelia 65, LCWM 60

LAKE CRYSTAL — Madelia defeated Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 65-60 on Tuesday in a Valley Conference boys’ basketball game.

Madelia was led by Ja’Sean Glover with 19 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, Colin Wihlm with 13 points and Kurt Lugo with 10 points.

Madelia (5-8) hosts Cleveland at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday.

Wabasso 65, BLHS 50

WABASSO — Wabasso defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game on Tuesday.

Will Carlson led the Rabbits with 21 points and Isaac Kronback scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Wabasso hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s at 8 p.m. on Friday.

Sibley East 70,

Mayer Lutheran 57

ARLINGTON — Caleb Dose scored 18 points as Sibley East defeated Mayer Lutheran in a prep boys’ basketball game on Tuesday.

Lucas Dose and Aaron Flieth scored 15 points for the Wolverines and JaBez Bates scored 11 points.

ST. PETER — New Ulm defeated Minnesota River in a Big South Conference boys’ hockey game on Tuesday.

Ethan O’Connor, Noah Wilmes and Glavine Schugel each scored a goal for the Eagles.
