Steel handle North Stars 9-1

NEW ULM — The last time that the New Ulm Steel played Breezy Point in an NA3HL game, they defeated the North Stars 13-2.

While the Steel did not hit the baker’s dozen total again Saturday night at the New Ulm Civic Center, they again dominated.

New Ulm outshot the North Stars 77-16 as the Steel downed Breezy Point 9-1.

Jacob Halvorson, Michael Savelkoul and Stanislav Danaev each scored two goals, with Jack Parks, Parker Dorn and Denis Denisov each adding a goal.

Mason Enright had three assists, with Corey Stormer adding two assists. Marcus Mack, Brian Oare, Danaev, Joey Gimberlin and Halvorson all added a helper for New Ulm.

New Ulm goalie Jack Raymond recorded 15 saves.

“I was not looking so much at the score tonight because we had changed things structurally this week,” Steel head coach Zach Stepan said. “We brought in a new player (Brock Finn) in a trade and he played well and we changed things up to keep players more accountable and we did a good job of that.”

New Ulm jumped on Breezy Point for three goals in the first period on two goals from Halvorson (18 goals on year) and a Danaev goal that forced Breezy Point to change goalies from Jake Sumner to Jacob Mitchell.

That did not work as the Steel added five goals in the second period. Michael Savelkoul added two goals (8,9), with Parker Dorn, Stanislav Danaev, and Jack Parks making it an 8-1 game as Garrett Freeman scored the North Stars’ lone goal of the game in the second period.

Danaev then closed out the scoring in the third period on the Steel’s 73rd shot on goal for a 9-1 cushion.

“I was more happy in the fact that we only allowed 16 shots on goal in the game than the nine goals scored,” Stepan said. “We now have guys who are holding each other accountable to be in the right spot when they need to be. Only giving up 16 shots on goal was a step in the right direction.”

The Steel (14-10-2-1) are home next Friday night when they host the North Iowa Bulls at 7:10 p.m. at the New Ulm Civic Center.
