Boys’ basketball

Waseca 83, New Ulm 59

NEW ULM — Waseca, the No. 1-ranked team in Class AA, downed New Ulm 83-59 on Thursday in Big South Conference boys’ basketball action.

The Eagles were led by Reece Melby’s 21 points and Cole Rhode’s 11 points and seven rebounds. Sam Furth added 10 points for New Ulm.

New Ulm (1-8, 0-3) hosts Worthington at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Girls’ basketball

Sleepy Eye 70, Cathedral 37

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye downed New Ulm Cathedral 70-37 on Thursday night in Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball action.

The Indians were led by Breaunna Mertz with 22 points, seven rebounds and two blocks, while Kadence Hesse had 12 points and five assists. Also for the Indians, Erika Lozano had 10 points and five steals, while Brittney Dittbenner added 10 points.

The Greyhounds were led by Lily Franta, who had 16 points, while Emily Schommer and Maggie Fliszar added 7 points apiece.

Cathedral (2-8, 1-5) is at Minnesota Valley Lutheran on Monday night for a conference matchup. The Indians (9-2, 3-2) travel to Springfield on Tuesday for a conference game.

St. Mary’s 73,

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s ran past Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther/Truman on Thursday night in nonconference girls’ basketball action.

Madison Mathiowetz led the Knights with 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals, while Reagan Severson had 16 points, six rebounds and two assists. Sydney Windschitl also had 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals for St. Mary’s, while Megan Ahlness added 11 points.

GHEC was led by Emily Stauter with 10 points.

St. Mary’s (10-1) hosts Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart Friday night for a Tomahawk Conference game.

Waseca 76, New Ulm 43

WASECA — Waseca downed New Ulm 76-43 on Thursday night in a Big South Conference girls’ basketball game.

The Eagles were led by Olivia Wick, who had 14 points and three blocks, and Hannah Osborne, who had 12 points.

New Ulm (3-5, 1-3) travels to Worthington for a section game on Tuesday.

Boys’ hockey

Luverne 5, New Ulm 2

LUVERNE — After scoring the first two goals, New Ulm watched Luverne score five unanswered goals to pick up a 5-2 win on Thursday night in boys’ hockey action.

New Ulm (7-4-1) got a goal and an assist each from Braxten Hoffmann and Glavine Schugel, while AJ Arenson and Ethan O’Connor each added a helper. Kyle Esser was in net for the Eagles and had 23 saves.
