Greyhounds remain unbeaten

NEW ULM — In the first half of their game with New Ulm Cathedral, the St. Clair Cyclones sank nine of their 19 shots from beyond the arc as they hung with the unbeaten Greyhounds, trailing 41-37 at halftime.

But the Cyclones cooled down in the second half, hitting only three of 13 3-pointers and the Cathedral tandem of James Gillis and Chris Knowles combined to score 40 of Cathedral’s first 52 points of the game as the Greyhounds (5-0) came away with a 79-66 win in non-conference boys’ basketball Saturday afternoon.

Gillis ended with a game-high 23 points and two assists with Chris Knowles ending with 22 points and five rebounds and five assists and four steals. Jon Zinniel tossed in 13 points and seven rebounds. Sam Knowles added nine points and 11 rebounds.

Connor Andree led the Cyclones (2-2) with 22 points.

“Credit to St. Clair — they made a lot of things difficult for us,” Cathedral coach Alan Woitas said. “They shot the ball really well in the first half.”

The Cyclones’ ability to make their 3-pointers kept St. Clair in the game and gave them a 22-20 lead on an Andree’s long-range shot as they hit six of their first 13 from beyond the arc.

Cathedral tied the game at 24 on two free throws from Chris Knowles. A Zinniel 3-pointer knotted the game at 27 before the Greyhounds went on a 14-10 run to take a 41-37 lead at the break.

Of the 27 first half points, 27 came courtesy of 3-pointers.

But early in the second half, Gillis and Chris Knowles went to work as they combined to score the first 11 points of the second half and took a 52-43 lead on back-to-back 3s from Gillis.

“James Gillis played a heck of a game for us,” Woitas said. “He controlled our offense, made shots — he really played a nice game. He showed up in a big way when we needed him.”

St. Clair pulled to within 59-52 but a Tony Geiger basket moved the Greyhounds to a 64-52 lead and they increased that to 66-56 on two Gillis’ free throws.

A Zinniel 3-pointer upped the lead to 69-58 and Cathedral sealed the game outscoring the Cyclones 8-3 to close out the contest.

“This was a long week for us,” Woitas said.” But it was a good week for us. We have some areas that we need to grow and we will continue to do that.”
