Area Roundup: MVL boys down BLHS, Cathedral boys hold off GFW

MVL 82, BLHS 64

NEW ULM — Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 82-64 on Friday in a Tomahawk conference boys’ basketball game.

MVL was led by Dunwa Omot, who had 25 points, five steals and five rebounds. Also for MVL, Mason Cox had 22 points and nine rebounds, Kyreis Harrison had 9 points, four assists and six rebounds and Jace Marotz had 8 points, three steals, five assists and seven rebounds.

Phil Kirtz had 18 points, four assists and 10 rebounds for BLHS. Also for BLHS, Preston Bashans and Ben Dornseif each scored 10 points.

MVL hosts Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton at 1:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Cathedral 83, GFW 71

WINTHROP — New Ulm Cathedral defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 83-71 on Friday in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game.

Jon Zinniel had 24 points and 11 rebounds for Cathedral. Also for Cathedral, Sam Knowles had 21 points, 11 rebounds and three steals, James Gillis had 16 points and Chris Knowles had 13 points.

GFW was led by Damian Hopp with 27 points and Ryan Lavrenz with 15 points.

Cathedral (2-0, 1-0) hosts Springfield at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. GFW plays at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Minnesota Valley Lutheran.

St. Mary’s 73,

Cedar Mountain 66

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Cedar Mountain 73-66 on Friday in a Tomahawk conference boys’ basketball game.

St. Mary’s was led by Blake Steffensmeier with 22 points and Carson Domeier with 19 points.

Trey Peterson-Juhl had 33 points and Devonte Charles had 19 points for Cedar Mountain.

St. Mary’s (3-1, 1-0) plays at 7:15 p.m. on Monday at Loyola. Cedar Mountain (1-1, 1-0) hosts Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Madelia 76,

Glenville-Emmons 65

MADELIA — Madelia got past Glenville-Emmons 76-65 on Friday night in first-round boys’ basketball action at the Madelia Tip-Off Tournament.

Kadin Benzel led Madelia with 22 points and five rebounds, while Kurt Lugo had 19 points and eight rebounds. Also for Madelia, Ethan Arndt had 18 points and eight rebounds, while Jessi Ramirez had 12 points and hit four 3s.

Madelia (1-1) takes on Truman/Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain in the tournament finals at Truman at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Girls’ basketball

MVL 67, BLHS 61

HECTOR — Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 67-61 on Friday in Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball action.

MVL’s Emma Nelson had 21 points and 17 rebounds. Also for MVL, Abby Nelson had 17 points, Abbie Riederer had 15 points, 12 rebounds and five steals, Kaylee Hunter had 12 rebounds and Maddie Pearson had 11 assists.

BLHS was led by Sara Kottke with 17 points, Rachel Kottke with 13 points and Allison Millbrandt with 12 points.

MVL (2-1, 2-0) plays at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton.

Marshall 77, New Ulm 39

MARSHALL — Marshall defeated New Ulm 77-39 on Fridat night in Big South Conference girls’ basketball action.

New Ulm was led by Kirsten Dennis and Daviney Dreckman with 13 points each. Dreckman led the team in rebounds with six, while Olivia Wick and Hannah Osborne grabbed five rebounds each.

New Ulm (0-2) travels to Jackson for a 7:30 p.m. game to play Jackson County Central Saturday in a Big South Showcase game.

St. Mary’s 82,

Cedar Mountain 36

MORGAN — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Cedar Mountain 82-36 on Friday in Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball action.

For St. Mary’s (5-0, 2-0) Sydney Windschitl had 24 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, Madison Mathiowetz had 22 points, six assists and five rebounds and Reagan Severson had 10 points and five assists.

Megan Sandgren was Cedar Mountain’s leading scorer with 11 points.

St. Mary’s hosts Wabasso at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. Cedar Mountain hosts BOLD at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.
