NEW ULM — Maddi O’Connor scored two goals and added an assist and Ava Brennan recorded her third shutout of the season as the New Ulm Eagles girl’s hockey team blanked Marshall 5-0 Thursday night in a Big South Conference game at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Brooke Arneson, Alexa Steffl and Julia Helget added goals. Emma Schieffert, McKenna Strong, Emma Brudelie and Arneson each earned helpers.

Brennan stopped seven Marshall shots in the game as the Eagles dominated the Tigers outshooting the Tigers 46-7.

New Ulm coach Kristin Faber said that she was pleased with her team’s play early.

“For two periods, we were playing really solid,” Faber said. “We had good flow to the game where we were all moving, we were controlling the puck and creating a lot of good looks on net. We had a lot of shots on net.”

The Eagles recorded 17 shots on Marshall goalie Emma Klenken in the first and then added 19 more in the second.

Brooke Arneson got the Eagles on the board at the 2:28 mark of the first period, with Schieffert and Strong getting assists before Steffl’s power-play goal — her third goal of the season — increased the lead to 2-0 with O’Connor getting the helper.

O’Connor made it 3-0 when she scored her fourth goal of the year unassisted.

New Ulm added two more goals in the second period when Julia Helget got her fifth goal of the season on a Brudelie assist.

O’Connor’s second goal of the game and her fifth goal of the year increased the New Ulm lead to 5-0.

In those two periods, the Eagles had 36 shots on goal compared to just four for the Tigers.

New Ulm would not score in a sluggish third period for the Eagles.

“We just quit moving our feet and everything kind of fell apart,” Faber said. “We are able to control the game when we play like we can.”

Faber said that she was happy to see newcomers playing well in the game.

“It was nice to see the Arneson, Helget and O’Connor group do well,” she said. “And Eva — she is just cool and calm back there in the nets. She is always ready to go.”

The Eagles, 6-3 overall, host Litchfield at 3 p.m. Saturday at the New Ulm Civic Center.
