Area roundup: New Ulm gymnastics team tops Worthington; Hulke sets Nicollet scoring record

New Ulm 130.925, Worthington 130.150

NEW ULM — New Ulm defeated Worthington 130.925-130.150 on Thursday in Big South gymnastics action.

New Ulm’s Kayla Goblirsch won the all-around with a score of 35.0. She took first on the vault (8.9), first on the beam (8.9), first on the floor (8.7) and second on the bars (8.5).

New Ulm’s Ella Frederich was fifth in the all-around with a score of 31.1. Frederich finished second on the floor (8.5).

Also for New Ulm, Paige Kalis finished third on the bars (8.05), Madison Miller finished fifth on the bars (7.575), Emily Guggisberg finished fourth on the beam (7.85) and tied for fifth on the floor (8.3) and Kaylee Hutchinson finished fifth on the beams (7.55).

Boys’ basketball

St. Mary’s 67, Nicollet 63

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Nicollet 67-63 on Thursday in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.

Despite the loss, Riley Hulke scored 25 points to become Nicollet’s all-time leading scorer with 1,672 points.

Hulke also had seven assists and five rebounds. Also for Nicollet, Shane Stevensen scored 21 points.

St. Mary’s was led by Carson Domeier, who scored 22 points and Blake Steffensmeier, who scored 20 points.

St. Mary’s hosts Cedar Mountain at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Nicollet plays at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran.

Cedar Mountain 65, Loyola 58

MANKATO — Cedar Mountain defeated Mankato Loyola 65-58 on Thursday in a nonconference boys’ basketball game.

Cedar Mountain was led by Trey Peterson-Juhl, who had 27 points, three assists and 17 rebounds. Also for Cedar Mountain, Chris Dow had 26 points, one assist and three rebounds, Devonte Charles had 9 points, seven assists and three rebounds, Cade Schiller had 3 points, one assist and seven rebounds and Dakota Pendleton had five assists and seven rebounds.

Cedar Mountain plays at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s.

Girls’ basketball

St. Mary’s 60, Nicollet 23

SLEEPY EYE — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s downed Nicollet/Loyola 60-23 on Thursday in nonconference girls’ basketball action.

The Knights were led by Madison Mathiowetz, who had 23 points, six rebounds and four steals. Also for St. Mary’s, Sydney Windschitl had 13 points, two assists and eight steals and Reagan Severson had 9 points, three assists and three steals.

Hayley Selby scored 7 points to lead the Raiders, while Josi Hansen added 5 points. Marah Hulke and Megan Frutiger had six rebounds apiece for Nicollet.

St. Mary’s (4-0) plays at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Cedar Mountain. Nicollet/Loyola plays at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at Springf­ield.

Sleepy Eye 64, RRC 59

LAMBERTON — Sleepy Eye defeated Red Rock Central 64-59 on Thursday in a nonconference girls’ basketball game.

The Indians were led by Brea Mertz with 15 points, 11 rebounds and five steals, Brittney Dittbenner with 18 points, five rebounds and five steals, Kadence Hesse with 12 points, five rebounds and five steals and Kaydince Thoms with 12 points and five rebounds.

Sleepy Eye (4-0, 1-0) plays at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Buffalo Lake/Hector/Stewart.

Boys’ hockey

New Ulm 3, Marshall 2, OT

MARSHALL — AJ Arneson’s goal at the 5:17 mark in overtime lifted New Ulm past Marshall 3-2 on Thursday night in Big South Conference boys’ hockey action.

New Ulm battled back from a 2-0 deficit. Noah Wilmes and Teagan Kamm added the other goals for New Ulm, while Teddy Giefer, Keagan Schiro, Jacob Berg, Hunter Hulke, Jace Addy, Ethan O’Connor each added an assist.

Joey Gag stopped 37 of 39 shots for the Eagles.

New Ulm (2-1) is at Litchfield at 7 p.m. Saturday.
