Eagles soar past Worthington 6-2

NEW ULM — For two periods, the New Ulm Eagles boys’ hockey team dominated Worthington taking a 5-0 lead and out-shooting the Trojans 37-11 in that span.

Those two periods enabled the Eagles to survive a less-than-stellar third period that saw Worthington outscore New Ulm 2-1 in the third period as New Ulm topped Worthington 6-2 Tuesday night in a Big South Conference game.

Six different Eagles scored goals in the game as Teddy Giefer, A.J. Arneson, Braxten Hoffmann, Nolan Drill, Jacob Berg and Cade Bushard got the puck by Worthington goalie Preston Thavixay. Berg’s and Bushard’s goals came on power plays.

Keagan Schiro, Jace Addy, Noah Wilmes, Teagan Kamm, Hoffmann, Hunter Hulke and Giefer each had an assist.

New Ulm goalie Joey Gag stopped 21 of 23 shots as the Eagles out-shot Worthington 50-23 in the game.

“We played a decent two periods but I could tell that the guys were looking past Worthington to Marshall on Thursday,” New Ulm coach Ryan Neuman said.

It took the Eagles just 16 seconds to score in the game when Teddy Giefer beat Thavixay on a slap shot.

Less than three minutes later, A.J, Arneson increased the lead to 2-0 before Braxten Hoffmann upped the lead to 3-0 at the 5:48 mark.

New Ulm tacked on two more scores in the second period.

Thavixay stopped a Hunter Hulke shot but Nolan Drill was there to put the rebound past Thavixay for a 4-0 lead. Jacob Berg’s power play goal increased the New Ulm lead to 5-0 after two periods.

But the third period was a stark contrast to what happened in the third period to the Eagles.

Worthington had three power plays in the third period and used one of them to cut the lead to 5-2 on a Traeton Holt goal after Bryce Olsen goal got Worthington on the board earlier.

“I think that we got a little lackadaisical off of that,” Neuman said. “It was not a good third period and that is something we have to address. Our third period was not the best up in Mound. We need to do a better job of conditioning or we need to be better mentally prepared.”

Cade Bushard closed out the scoring for New Ulm at the 14:38 mark of the third period as the Eagles played without leading scorer from last year, Glavine Schugel who is sidelined with a high ankle sprain.

“We do not know how long he will be out yet,” Neuman said. “He was able to get his foot into a skate today.’

Neuman said that Gag will start in goal again on Thursday in Marshall.
