Prep football: Wabasso tops MVL; Houston holds off Madelia

Wabasso 24, MVL 14

WABSSSO — Wabasso held back Minnesota Valley Lutheran 24-14 on Friday night in Southwest District, East Subdistrict football action.

Carter Benz threw for two touchdowns and 159 yards for the Rabbits on 5-of-12 passing, while Lance Wagner rushed for 114 yards and a TD on 24 carries. Nick Marotzke also had 82 yards rushing and a touchdown on 15 carries for Wabasso.

Will Carlson had three catches for 65 yards and a TD for Wabasso, while Hunter Taylor had an 88-yard TD reception.

Cole Frericks had 10 total tackles and 1/2 sack to lead Wabasso’s defense, while Zach Thooft had nine tackle assists and a sack.

For MVL, Mason Cox passed for 161 yards and a pair of TDs on 13-of-21 passing and also rushed for 88 yards on 14 carries. Colton Collum had three catches for 94 yards and a score for MVL, while Carlos Ramirez had four catches for 57 yards and a TD.

MVL’s defense was led by Ramirez, who had 12 total tackles and 1/2 sack, while Cox had 11 total tackles.

Wabasso is at Murray County Central on Wednesday, while MVL hosts Adrian Area Wednesday at Johnson Field.

Houston 38, Madelia 28

HOUSTON — Houston held off Madelia 38-28 on Friday night in 9-man South District football action.

Ethan Arndt led the Blackhawks with 110 yards passing and three touchdowns passing while also rushing for 105 yards and a touchdown. Ja’Sean Glover, Kadin Banzel and Isaac Arduser each had a receiving touchdown for Madelia.

Madelia recovered three fumbles, while Nick Chloros and Vaughn Nolan added eight total tackles each for the Blackhawks.

Madelia (2-5) hosts Heron Lake-Okabena Wednesday.

Nicollet 46, GHEC/T 14

NICOLLET — Nicollet clobbered Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman on Friday in a 9-man West District football contest. The Raiders had a total of 364 yards offensively.

Jon Mans was 9 for 14 passing with 182 yards and three touchdowns. Riley Hulke added four catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. Riley Mans had a 28-yard touchdown run.

Nathan Duis had two catches for 47 yards and a touchdown. Shane Stevensen added a 15-yard touchdown reception. Avery Northquest had five carries for 50 yards with one touchdown run.

Tyler Laven led the Radiers with 12 total tackles while Duis had five solo tackles, two assists and two sacks. Logan Shay added seven total tackles and three sacks. Avery Northquest had a sack with an interception.

Nicollet (6-1) will host Mabel-Canton on Wednesday.

Late Friday

Edgerton 42, Cedar Mountain 24

EDGERTON — Edgerton toppled Cedar Mountain 42-24 on Friday night in 9-man football action.

Leading Cedar Mountain was quarterback Cade Schiller, who went 23 for 44 for 327 yards passing, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Schiller also rushed in a pair of touchdowns.

Also for the Cougars, Caden Kleinschmidt had three carries for 39 yards and 10 catches for 153 yards and a touchdown, while Nick Freitag had five catches for 92 yards and a touchdown.

Late Friday

Maple River 32, GFW 20

MAPLETON — Maple River knocked off Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Friday night 32-20 in South Central District, Blue Subdistrict football action.

JC Munoz led the Thunderbirds with 13 carries for 158 yards rushing and a touchdown, while Ryan Lavrenz added a rushing touchdown and 64 yards rushing on 12 carries and Evan Martin added a touchdown and 23 yards rushing.

Munoz also had 11 total tackles to lead GFW.
