NEW ULM — New Ulm shut out Waseca 1-0 on Thursday in Section 2A soccer Tournament action. New Ulm is the No. 8 seed while Waseca was the No. 9 seed.

With the win, the Eagles (12-4-1) will face top-seeded Mankato West at noon on Saturday in Mankato at the Caswell North Soccer Complex in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.

New Ulm head coach Jonathon Johnson said when facing the Bluejays, it is always a tough match. He noted that the game got pretty physical late, but that teams are always physical in the playoffs.

Bryn Nesvold earned an assist when she made a crossing pass to Madison Roufs, who scored the Eagles’ only goal. It came at the 35th minute of the first half.

The goalies for both squads played well, stopping the opposition from scoring often. Waseca had a chance to score but it came up short when the ball hit the crossbar and bounced away.

In the second half, the Bluejays had a golden opportunity to score when a player had a shot at an open net, but the ball veered to the right of goal.

New Ulm had 20 shots on goal. Goalie Kendra Nesvold had a total of 12 saves in the match. Sydney Owens filled in and she had three saves in the second half.

Kendra Nesvold left with an injury in the second half but returned after about 10 minutes.
