Area roundup: Knights top Greyhounds in 4, Springfield football team holds off Adrian 20-7

St. Mary’s 3, Cathedral 1

NEW ULM — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s fended off New Ulm Cathedral on Thursday night in Tomahawk Conference volleyball action with a 25-12, 21-25, 28-26, 25-22 win.

The Knights’ Madison Mathiowetz had 21 digs and nine kills, Lauren Hoffmann had 20 digs and Trista Ibberson added 10 kills. Also for the Knights, Allie Labat had 18 set assists, while Bella Hoffmann had 17 set assists.

Sarah Mohr led the Greyhounds with 17 kills, while Maggie Fliszar had 13 kills. Also for Cathedral, Lily Brennan had 41 set assists and 25 digs and Lily Franta had 20 digs.

Cathedral (13-11, 4-4) hosts Mankato Loyola on Monday, while St. Mary’s (16-8, 6-2) awaits playoffs.

MVL 3, Cedar Mountain 1

MORGAN — Minnesota Valley Lutheran downed Cedar Mountain 25-13, 25-16, 22-25, 25-17 on Thursday night in Tomahawk Conference volleyball action.

The Chargers, the 2019 Tomahawk Conference champions, finished their time in the conference this year at 8-0 and are currently 22-3-1 overall. They have a home match on Monday against Madelia to wrap up their regular season.

The Chargers were led by Mara Weisensel, who had 20 kills and four blocks, and Maddie Pearson, who had 40 set assists and 13 digs. Also for MVL, Emma Nelson had 10 kills and four ace serves, while Lily Mohror had nine kills and four ace serves.

The Cougars were led by Nadia Meyers, who had 10 kills, 15 digs, 11 set assists and three ace serves, while Maddie Rose had nine kills and two block assists. Also for Cedar Mountain, Teresa Larsen had seven kills and two block assists, while Mykenna Vollmer had five kills, seven digs and five set assists and Morgan Engholm had 21 digs and three ace serves.

The Cougars (2-23-1, 0-8) host Renville County West on Monday.

Springfield 3,

Sleepy Eye 1

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield took down Sleepy Eye 25-15, 13-25, 25-13, 25-18 on Thursday night in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

The Indians were led by McKenna Strong, who had 12 kills and a trio of blocks, while Brittney Dittbenner had 11 kills and nine digs and Sandy Flores had 31 set assists and 16 digs.

For the Tigers, Eva Mark had 47 set assists and 10 digs, while Sydney Hauger had eight kills, seven blocks and three digs and Meriah Kirschstein had 10 kills. Also for Springfield, Cora Wahl had 14 kills, 20 digs, five blocks and three aces, Cylee Graff had 13 kills and eight digs, Courtney Wendt had 13 digs and an ace and Ashlyn Rosenau had 14 digs.

The Indians (11-11, 2-6) host St. Clair on Monday, while the Tigers (14-13, 3-5) host Mt. Lake Area/Comfrey on Tuesday night.

Nicollet 3, JWP 1

NICOLLET — Nicollet held off Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton on Thursday night with a 25-12, 28-18, 21-25, 27-25 win in Valley Conference volleyball action.

The Raiders got 27 kills and 16 digs from Jill Thompson to lead the way, while Marah Hulke had 28 set assists. Hayley Selby also had 15 digs and three blocks for Nicollet, while Jackie Thompson had two ace serves.

Nicollet (11-11, 6-3) hosts Maple River on Monday.

GFW 3, Wabasso 0

WINTHROP — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop swept Wabasso 25-20, 25-14, 25-16 on Thursday night in Tomahawk Conference volleyball action.

For Wabasso, Sarah Franta had 15 digs and added an ace, while Cora Eichten had 10 kills and a pair of blocks. Also for the Rabbits, Kelsey Frank had nine set assists, while Avery Carlson had eight set assists and Halle Huhnerkoch had seven digs, five kills and an ace.

For the Thunderbirds, Jaedan Nachreiner had seven kills, while Julia Schweiss had six kills and three blocks and Hannah Panitzke had six kills. Also for GFW, Brynn Busse had 15 set assists and four aces, while Katie Lee had 17 digs and Rylee Sabo added 11 digs and two aces.

Wabasso (7-17, 5-3) is at Canby on Monday night, while GFW (15-13, 5-3) is at Redwood Valley Monday night.

BLHS 3,

Mankato Loyola 1

HECTOR — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart topped Mankato Loyola 27-25, 25-16, 24-26, 25-10 on Thursday night in nonconference volleyball action.

Sara Kottke led the Mustangs with 23 kills, four ace serves and two blocks, while Allison Dornseif had 35 set assists, eight digs and seven kills. Also for BLHS, Emilie Hable had nine kills and nine digs and Tia Weispfennig had seven kills.

BLHS (13-15) awaits playoffs next.

Springfield 20,

Adrian Area 7

ADRIAN — Springfield held off Adrian Area 20-7 on Thursday in a Southwest District, East Subdistrict football game.

The Tigers scored right away on the opening kick as Jordan Toll took the opening kick 83 yards for a touchdown. Decker Scheffler then completed a 1-yard TD pass to Mason Leonard for a 14-0 Springfield lead with 8:51 left in the first quarter before Adrian added a touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a 7-yard TD pass.

The Tigers then saw a 47-yard TD pass from Scheffler to Nolan Hovland put them up 20-7 with 8:46 left in the fourth.

Scheffler had 185 yards passing, two touchdowns and an interception, while Hovland had four catches for 102 yards. Rummel rushed for 62 yards, while Ivan Hovland led all Springfield defenders with 14 tackles.

Rummel and Curtis Tauer each had 10 tackles for Springfield.

Springfield (7-0) hosts New Ulm Cathedral on Wednesday.
