Eagles pick up Big South win over St. James

New Ulm 3, St. James 2

ST. JAMES — New Ulm defeated St. James Area 25-22, 23-25, 25-10, 22-25, 15-7 on Thursday in a Big South Conference volleyball match.

New Ulm was led by Natalie Yackley, who had six aces, six kills, 20 set assists, three blocks and five digs. Also for New Ulm, Talya Hoel had five kills, 17 set assists, three blocks, 11 digs and Ally Steffensmeier had two aces, six kills and nine digs and Nora Windschill had 13 kills and 11 digs.

New Ulm (4-1) plays on Saturday in the Jackson County Central tournament.

Cathedral 3, Cedar Mountain 0

MORGAN — New Ulm Cathedral swept Cedar Mountain 25-9, 25-14, 25-13 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Cedar Mountain’s Teresa Larsen had four kills, Morgan Engholm had 13 digs and Madia Meyers and Hailey Hollar each had nine digs.

Cathedral did not report any statistics.

Cathedral hosts Sleepy Eye at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Cedar Mountain plays at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.

BLHS 3,

Sleepy Eye 0

HECTOR — Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart swept Sleepy Eye 25-21, 25-23, 25-20 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Marissa Ebbers led BLHS with one ace, 11 digs, one block and three kills. Also for BLHS, Emile Hable had five digs, three blocks and 11 kills, Sara Kottke had five digs, three blocks and 17 kills and Tia Weispfenning had one ace, three digs, two blocks and seven kills.

For Sleepy Eye, Brittney Dittbenner had five kills and 20 digs, McKenna Strong had four kills and Sandy Flores had 18 set assists, 13 digs and two aces.

Sleepy Eye (5-4, 0-1) plays at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at New Ulm Cathedral.

JWP 3, Madelia 0

JANESVILLE — Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton defeated Madelia 25-15, 25-20, 25-12 on Thursday in a Valley Conference volleyball match.

Madelia was led by Lillian Maul, who had three aces, one kill and five digs. Also for Madelia, Emily Stevenson had one ace, one kill and six digs and Brook Lensing had two aces and four digs.

Madelia (0-9, 0-2) hosts Nicollet at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Nicollet 3, MCW 2

NICOLLET — Nicollet defeated Martin County West 25-17, 25-15, 24-26, 16-25, 15-6 on Thursday in a Valley Conference volleyball match.

Jill Thompson led Nicollet with 20 kills and 19 digs. Also for Nicollet, Brook Gohr had 10 digs and three aces and Marah Hulke had 18 set assists.

Nicollet plays at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Madelia.

GFW 3, Springfield 2

WINTHROP — Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop defeated Springfield 24-26, 25-23, 30-25, 25-23, 7-15 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.

Shelby Ramirez led GFW with 21 kills and two blocks. Also for GFW, Julia Schweiss had 18 kills and three blocks, Brynn Busse had 24 set assists and Kaity Lee had 26 digs.

GFW hosts Cedar Mountain at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Fairfax. Springfield plays at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s.

Girls soccer

Mankato East 3,

New Ulm 2, OT

NEW ULM — Mankato East defeated New Ulm 3-2 in overtime in nonconference girls’ soccer action.

New Ulm had 10 shots on goal. The first goal was scored by Bryn Nesvold off an assist from Kay Rysdahl. The second goal was scored by Paige Kalis.

New Ulm’s goalie, Kendra Nesvold, had 18 saves.

New Ulm (4-2-1) plays at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Jordan.
