Region 2C playoffs picking up

NEW ULM — Friday and Saturday could be an interesting two days for the six teams in the Region 2C playoffs.

Right now, the New Ulm Brewers and the Sleepy Eye Indians sit on top of the Region 2C round-robin format with each at 3-1.

The Stark Longhorns are 2-1 followed by Springfield at 1-2. Hanska and Lamberton are each 1-3.

The Brewers can capture the No. 1 seed in the region with a win at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Mueller Park when they play Springfield.

Meanwhile, the Stark Longhorns travel to Lamberton for a 7:30 p.m. game Friday night.

Two more key games are scheduled for Saturday afternoon, when Sleepy Eye heads to Stark and Hanska hits the road at Springfield.

“Some things would have to happen, but four teams could end up with 2-3 records,” Myron Seidl, the President of the Tomahawk East League said. “No one is officially eliminated yet.”

A Brewers win Friday and a Sleepy Eye win on Saturday would have both New Ulm and Sleepy Eye at 4-1, but the Brewers hold an earlier playoff win over the Indians.

A Lamberton win over Stark on Friday would move the Long Sox to 2-3 and drop the Longhorns to 2-2, with Stark then entertaining the 3-1 Indians at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Also on Saturday at 1 p.m., Hanska could improve to 2-3 with a win at Springfield, who could be either 2-2 going into that game or 1-3.

“Some people do not like the round-robin format,” Seidl said. “But the round-robin is where everyone plays everyone. I think that it is a reasonable set-up as a double-elimination (tournament). If you win your games, you will be in great shape.

“We have a scenario in place for every possibility that could come up,” Seidl added.

Tiebreakers may also be needed Saturday night.

“That is why we are playing both games on Saturday afternoon a 1,” Seidl said. “If there is a four-way tie, we want to get those possible games going at 5:30, with sites to be determined,” Seidl said. “But if there is only one playoff game, that would be played at 7:30, with a site to be determined.”

So there is really just one thing for amateur baseball fans to do Friday night and Saturday afternoon and possibly night: Watch some Region 2C playoff baseball.

It may get very interesting.
