MARSHALL — After both opening their sub-state tournament quests with convincing victories, the Marshall Black and New Ulm Junior Legion Gold baseball teams looked to keep the momentum rolling in a semifinal matchup on Saturday. Thanks to a big second inning, New Ulm quickly took the lead and never looked back as they shut down Marshall 12-2 in five innings to advance to the Division 1, South Outstate Sub-State championship game on Sunday.

Neither side was able to get on the scoreboard in the opening inning, as New Ulm stranded a pair of baserunners while Marshall couldn’t take advantage of a leadoff walk from Chase Douglas.

New Ulm wasted little time in opening up the offense in the next frame, though, as back-to-back RBI singles from Evan Wiltscheck and Jackson Bode made it 2-0. New Ulm’s patience at the plate would be a key factor over the next several at-bats, as they drew five walks to plate three runs. A pair of two RBI singles from Cole Ranweiler and Wiltscheck also highlighted New Ulm’s big inning as they took a 9-0 lead after two innings.

New Ulm wasn’t done there, however, as Nolan Drill led off the third with a single before coming around to score when Ranweiler reached on an error. A few batters later, Tony Geiger connected on an RBI triple to bring it to 11-0. In the fifth, Ethan Stade plated a run on an RBI single to make it 12-0.

Marshall was able to put a pair of baserunners aboard in the bottom half of the fifth when Douglas reached on an error and Spencer Wambeke drew a walk and capitalized as Cole Felcyn drilled a two-RBI double to cut the deficit to 12-2. But that would be all Marshall would get as Stade struck out the next batter to cement the victory.

Ranweiler led the way for New Ulm with three hits and two RBIs, while Wiltscheck added a pair of hits and three RBIs and Tony Geiger and Jackson Bode each had a hit and combined for three RBIs.

Stade earned the complete-game victory on the mound, going five innings while allowing two runs on four hits and striking out six.

Felcyn led the way for Marshall with a hit and two RBIs, while Jack Bly, AJ Toulouse and Braden Meyer each added a hit.

Charlie Jacobson took the loss for Marshall, going 1 2/3 innings while allowing eight runs on five hits and striking out three.

New Ulm Gold will face Marshall again on Sunday at noon with a trip to the state tournament on the line.
