New Ulm Gold blanks Jordan

Staff photo by Steve Muscatello New Ulm Legion Gold’s Jaden Domeier slides into second during Gold’s 9-0 win against Jordan in a playoff game Thursday at Mueller Park in New Ulm.

NEW ULM — Mark Schommer pitched three innings of three-hit ball and Jace Marotz allowed just one hit in four innings as New Ulm Legion blanked Jordan 9-0 in the winner’s bracket of the Sub-State 2 D-I American Legion Baseball Tournament.

Marotz was credited with the win. He fanned seven as Gold improved to 28-4 on the season.

Jon Draheim took the loss for Jordan (6-9).

Josh Seidl led the 12-hit New Ulm attack with three hits with Hunter Ranweiler and Chris Knowles each adding two hits.

Mason Cox had three RBIs with Colton Schaefer driving in two runs.

Rain did cause the postponement of Gold’s winner’s bracket game with Mankato American later in the evening.

Gold will now play Mankato American at 7 p.m. Friday at Mueller Park in a winner’s bracket game.

Rain also threw a curveball at the other games. Sleepy Eye will now meet Fairmont at 2 p.m. Friday in an elimination game at Mueller Park. At approximately 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Jordan and Worthington will resume their game in the top of the third inning with Jordan holding a 1-0 lead.

That is also an elimination contest.

New Ulm took a 1-0 lead in the second inning off of Draheim when Knowles led off with a triple and scored on a Cox base hit.

Gold pushed three more runs across in the third when Jaden Domeier led off with a single. That ended Draheim’s day as he left with a sore arm. Ironically, Draheim and Schommer will be teammates next year at the University of Mary.

Adam Kreuser relieved Draheim. Domeier stole second, took third on a Seidl sacrifice bunt and scored on a Hunter Ranweiler single.

Ranweiler swiped second and Braden Zimmerman walked. A Knowles’ groundout and a two-run double off of the bat of Cox upped the lead to 4-0.

New Um then scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Teagan Kamm walked and Seidl singled. A Braden Zimmerman triple, a Knowles single, two hit batters and a Schaefer single made it 9-0.
