NEW ULM — With everyone on board, the Sleepy Eye Legion team got to see how potent its offense could be.

Sleepy Eye scored six runs in the top of the first and 12 times in the third inning as it crushed Worthington 22-6 in five innings in the first round of the Division 1, Sub-state 2 legion baseball playoffs at Mueller Park.

Sleepy Eye will now play at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Mueller Park. It will also play a second game later on in the day, win or lose.

Sleepy Eye finished the game with 21 hits and it was led offensively by Nathan Walter, who was 4 for 4 with four RBIs and four runs scored. Carter Brinkman was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and four runs scored and Nick Labat was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Spencer Hoffman was 3 for 4 with three runs scored and four RBIs.

Brinkman, one of the college players on Sleepy Eye’s team, said it was a fun environment in the dugout.

“It felt really good, we finally got to be on all cylinders and clicking together,” Brinkman said. “We knew we could do this all season, having guys here and there and not always showing up, it’s just difficult to do that and today we did that.”

Dallas Bauer earned the win for Sleepy Eye. He went five innings, allowed six hits and six runs. He struck out four and walked four.

Ben Rogers took the loss for Worthington. He lasted just two innings, allowed 15 runs and 15 hits. He walked one and struck out three.

Brinkman got the offense started in the first inning with an RBI to score Zach Haala. Walter drove in two runs with an RBI single and Hoffman later had a one-out single to score two more runs.

“It was really on our side, once people got their confidence going in the beginning of the game, it just kept going,” Brinkman said.

Sleepy Eye scored three runs in the second inning before blowing up in the third inning, scoring 12 times. Walter drove in two runs in the inning and Nick Labat had a pair of doubles and four RBIs in the inning. Kyle Domeier also had a two-run single and Spencer Hoffman had a two-run single.

Sleepy Eye added a single run in the fourth inning and the team will look to keep the hot bats going on Thursday.

“We’re obviously really confident right now,” Brinkman said. “We’re all seeing the ball really well, the lineups coming through and the bottom guys are getting on for us. Everybody is doing their job.”
