Amateur baseball: Mielke’s 3-run home run helps lead Sleepy Eye by Essig on Wednesday

Sleepy Eye 7, Essig 3

ESSIG — With things knotted up at 3-all in the top of the ninth, Matt Mielke’s three-run homer broke the tie and helped lead the Sleepy Eye Indians over the Essig Bluejays 7-3 on Wednesday night in Tomahawk East League amateur baseball action.

Mielke went 2 for 5 on the night, while Carter Brinkman was 3 for 4 with a double and Nathan Walter was 2 for 5 with an RBI for Sleepy Eye. Alan Woitas got the win for the Indians in three innings of relief, giving up three hits and two walks for one earned run allowed while striking out four.

Erich Prokosch took the loss in 3 1/3 innings of relief for Essig with three hits and two walks allowed for three earned runs. He struck out three.

Mitch Stueber was 3 for 5 with a pair of RBIs to lead the Bluejays, while Hunter Sehr was 2 for 3.

Gibbon 5, Stark 3

STARK — The Gibbon Reds topped the Stark Longhorns 5-3 on Wednesday night in Tomahawk East League amateur baseball action.

Kyle Maurer got the win for Gibbon in three innings of relief, allowing three hits and a pair of walks for one earned run with a strikeout.

Sean Mathiowetz took the loss for Stark in 4 1/3 innings, giving up five hits and three walks for three earned runs with three strikeouts.

Justin Schwecke, Tony Stadtherr and Nolan Huiras all each had two hits for Gibbon, while Maurer and Zach Weber each drove in two runs and added one hit apiece.

Zach Haala, Adam Sellner and Tim Seifert each added two hits apiece for Stark, while Brandon Helget drove in two with a hit and Nick Labat drove in one with a hit.
