NEW ULM — Friday night in a win over Osseo, the New Ulm Junior Legion used production from the bottom part of their batting order to earn the win.

Saturday night in a game against Harrisburg (S.D.) the roles were reversed.

Taylor Klein, the No. 9 batter in the Tigers’ lineup and who had gone hitless in his previous at-bats, connected for a bases-loaded double with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning and erased a 3-0 New Ulm lead to come away with 5-3 win over New Ulm.

The loss also knocked out the Junior Legion from championship Sunday play.

Sam Raben got the win for Harrisburg going 6 2/3 innings. He gave up three runs and fanned three. Lance Telfrey got the save for Harrisburg. He entered the game when New Ulm loaded the bases with two outs and he got the final out.

Matt Rieger took the loss for New Ulm. He was charged with four runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Cole Ranweiler led New Ulm with two hits.

Ben Loos and Tyman Long each had two hits with Taylor driving in three runs.

This was a game that really came down to each team’s final at-bat.

“We were cruising along and had a nice ( 3-0) lead. They got on Matt — I brought in Ethan [Stade] — he was throwing well,” New Ulm coach Mike Munce said. “But one pitch hurt us. Baseball is a funny game and this one got away from us.”

New Ulm took a 1-0 in the fifth inning without the aid of a hit.

Cade Bushard walked and was sacrificed to second by Isaiah Miller. He took third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.

New Ulm added two more runs in the top of the sixth when Nolan Drill reached on an infield error. Ranweiler singled with both runners moving up on a wild pitch.

Bushard’s single scored Drill with Ranweiler racing home later on a double steal for a 3-0 lead.

But in he bottom of the sixth, Harrisburg managed to come back.

Loos singled and scored on a Tyman Long triple. Long then scored on a passed ball.

Carter Bahrnhofer reached on an infield error. Will Simmons followed with a single, ending Reiger’s night.

Stade walked Connor Hanschol before fanning Kammen Hudson for the second out.

But on a 1-1 offering from Stade, Klein ripped a bases-clearing double for a 5-3 lead.

New Ulm mounted a threat in the top of the seventh when it loaded the bases with two outs but failed to score.

“These teams are good in the tournament,” Munce said. “It does not matter where you are in the line-up but the better team did not win tonight.”
