NEW ULM — After picking up a 4-0 win to start the day, New Ulm VFW Silver quickly saw things turn the other way in a lopsided loss to Luverne in the second game.

Silver lost 10-1 to Luverne in Game 2 after it defeated Prior Lake to start Friday’s play in the Junior Upper Midwest Classic at Mueller Park.

Luverne grabbed a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning off of New Ulm starter Josh Giefer. Giefer lasted three innings, allowed five hits and four runs. He struck out three and walked one in the losing effort and New Ulm used six different pitchers in the game.

Colby Crabtree earned the win. He gave up one run and two hits over four innings, striking out five.

Giefer stranded the bases loaded in the top of the second after Luverne threatened to score the first runs of the game, but Giefer got a strikeout to end the threat. Then, down 4-0, Silver had a chance to get some runs back and loaded the bases in the bottom of the third, but the inning ended with back-to-back strikeouts.

New Ulm scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning after Jaden Drill singled and eventually scored on Brayden Geariety’s single. Drill finished the second game 2 for 3 and Julian Hernandez also went 2 for 4 for Silver. New Ulm committed four errors in the loss.

Luverne scored two runs in the fourth, once in the sixth and three more times in the seventh.

Earlier in the day, Silver picked up a 4-0 win over Prior Lake.

Jace Schaefer threw a shutout to lead New Ulm. Schaefer allowed four hits in the complete-game effort, striking out one. Drill was 2 for 3 to lead New Ulm offensively.
