NEW ULM — Sometimes the lower part of a team’s batting order can be overlooked by an opposing team and can do more damage that the heart of the order.

Friday night in the New Ulm Junior Legion’s game against Osseo in the Junior Upper Midwest Classic, New Ulm used the lower part of the batting order to secure a win.

Hunter Sehr, Matt Rieger and Evan Wiltscheck — the seven, eight and nine hitters in the New Ulm line-up — each had two hits and combined to drive in four runs as New Ulm cruised by Osseo 9-1 at Mueller Park.

Nolan Drill got the complete-game win for the Junior Legion. He scattered six hits and fanned five.

Tyler Wolff took the loss for Osseo. He was charged with all nine runs in 3 1/3 innings of work.

Cole Ranweiler and Rieger each drove in two runs.

“This was a good, hard-played game by the guys,” New Ulm Junior Legion coach Mike Munce said. “They had that tough loss [to Chaska] Thursday but we knew what we had to do today. [Osseo] beat Chaska earlier today so we brought everything we had to do. We took care of business.”

New Ulm grabbed a 2-0 lead after two innings on single runs in the first and second innings. In the first inning, a Ranweiler groundout scored run and a second inning it was a sacrifice fly from Teagan Kamm.

The Junior Legion then scored three runs in the third on a double steal, a Rieger RBI single and a Wiltscheck run-scoring double.

New Ulm then added five runs in the fourth with the lower part of the batting order again doing the bulk of the damage.

Kamm walked and scored on Drill’s triple to left field. Tony Geiger and Cade Bushard walked before a passed ball and the second double steal of the game upped the lead to 8-0. Sehr’s base hit made it 9-0.

“We do not have a weak spot in our line-up,” Munce said. “And we like to use the double steals in the right situations. Nolan Drill gutted it out, he did not have his best stuff but he only gave up one run in seven innings,” Munce said.

The win capped a good day for the Junior Legion who earlier in the day defeated Mankato Maroon 13-3 in five innings.

Sehr got the win. Kamm had three hits with three runs scored, Drill had two hits and four RBIs. Isaiah Miller had three RBIs and Sam Keckeisen had two RBIs.
