Schommer, Legion Gold cruise past Hutchinson

NEW ULM — Mark Schommer scattered three hits and one run through six innings and New Ulm Legion Gold put up a pair of multi-run innings as they improved to 10-3 on the season with a 9-1 win over Hutchinson Wednesday night at Mueller Park.

Schommer fanned three and walked only two in earning the win.

Colton Schaefer set down Post 96 batters in order in the seventh.

Dan Vandesteg took the loss for Hutchinson. He was charged with seven runs in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Cole Ranweiler and Aaron Portner each had two hits for New Ulm, with Portner driving in two runs in Gold’s five-run sixth inning.

“This was the second game that Mark (Schommer) has pitched for us this season,” Gold head coach Chris Peters said. “He threw a nice game for us and he also threw a nice game earlier in his first start for us. He fell behind on a few hitters but came back and got outs for us.”

Gold, who plays in Jordan on Sunday before hosting Waseca on Monday, took a 1-0 lead in the second when Braden Zimmeman led off with a double and went to third on a passed ball.

He scored when Chris Knowles’ infield grounder was booted.

Gold then manufactured three runs in the bottom of the third, using a single and two sacrifice flys.

Cole Ranweiler walked before Knowles and Teagan Kamm both walked to load the bases.

Kamm’s sacrifice fly scored Ranweiler. Nolan Drill walked to again load the bases for Jaden Domeier, who singled in Knowles. Josh Seidl’s sacrifice fly upped the New Ulm lead to 4-0.

“We have been good about being able to manufacture runs this season,” Peters said. “We are a couple of big hits away from breaking some games open. We are putting the ball in play.”

And Gold was able to break the game open in the bottom of the sixth after Post 96 scored their lone run. Noah Hauge struck out but reached first base on a passed ball. He took second on another passed ball.

A walk to Seidl and an error scored a run. A walk, a single, a fielder’s choice and Portner’s two-run double closed out the scoring for New Ulm.
