New Ulm leads All-Journal baseball teams with 5 selections

First Team

Decker Scheffler, Jr.,

Springfield

The two-time Tomahawk All-Conference and two-time All-Section player finished this season with a .476 batting average, a team-high seven home runs and a team-high 37 RBIs. He also led the team in hits (40), doubles (12), triples (3), runs scored (39) and slugging percentage (.940).

Scheffler didn’t just show off his bat this season, though, he also showed off his speed, swiping 24 bases to lead the team. One of the top hitters for the Tomahawk Conference champion Tigers, Scheffler was also an All-Journal First Team member last season and has a career batting average of .483. He also has career numbers of 10 homers, 22 doubles, 67 RBIs and 52 stolen bases.

Mason Rummel, Jr.,

Springfield

Rummel was one of the top defenders for Springfield this season and he had a bat that was just as impressive. Wracking up 35 hits and 29 RBIs, Rummel hit .473 this year with a .622 slugging percentage.

He also had six doubles this season, one homer and a triple. The All-Conference, All-Section player was described by head coach Brandon Wilhelmi as “the top catcher in our area.” Wilhelmi also said that Rummel’s competitive nature is second to none.

Rummel currently has a career .350 batting average, 48 hits and 36 RBIs.

Isaac Fink, Sr., Springfield

Fink was tied for second on the Tigers in hits this season, wracking up 35 with a .432 batting average, up from last season’s .375 batting average. He also added 10 doubles, 23 RBIs and scored 26 runs.

Fink also was one of Springfield’s top pitchers with a 1.42 ERA, 43 strikeouts and a 5-3 record. He gave up just 16 hits in 39 1/3 innings.

Fink is also a two-time All-Conference and two-time All-Section player and made the All-Journal Second Team last season. He finishes with career numbers of a .352 batting average, 63 RBIs, 73 hits, an 11-3 record on the mound and a 2.16 ERA in 70 2/3 innings of work.

Aaron Portner, Sr., Cathedral

Portner finished his senior season with the Greyhounds with some strong numbers. He hit .379 this season with 25 hits, 23 RBIs and 22 runs scored. He also had a 1.79 ERA on the mound to lead Cathedral with a 5-2 record.

The All-Conference player allowed 16 walks and 34 hits while striking out 58 this season in 47 innings of work. He has career numbers of 64 RBIs, 56 hits and a .321 batting average on offense while having career pitching numbers of a 2.18 ERA, an 11-7 record and 122 strikeouts.

Nolan Drill, Jr., New Ulm

Drill was a force at the plate this year for the Eagles, batting .400 heading into the postseason with 25 hits, nine doubles, 18 RBIs and 13 runs scored. He also pitched 27 2/3 innings with 16 strikeouts and a 2.80 ERA.

The No. 3 hitter for New Ulm was described by New Ulm head coach Kevin Briggs as a hitter that “drives the ball to all fields and is a tough out for opposing hitters.” He was also named to the Big South All-Conference Team this season.

Mark Schommer, Sr.,

Cathedral

Schommer wrapped up his senior season with the Greyhounds with a 2.18 ERA and a 7-2 record. An honorable mention in the Tomahawk Conference this year, Schommer also struck out 62 in 45 innings and allowed 11 walks and 42 hits.

He also added 18 hits, 10 RBIs and 15 runs scored on offense and hit .286.

He has career pitching numbers of 169 strikeouts, an 18-5 record and a 2.57 career ERA. His career numbers on offense give him 76 hits, 57 RBIs and a .326 batting average.

Cole Ranweiler, So., New Ulm

Ranweiler hit .424 heading into playoffs this season and was one of New Ulm’s best hitters with 28 hits, 18 RBIs, 17 runs scored and 12 stolen bases. Described by his head coach Kevin Briggs as the main part of New Ulm’s offensive attack, the sophomore shortstop and 2019 Big South All-Conference player can only improve from here out.

Jace Marotz, Jr., MVL

Marotz, a pitcher and center fielder for the Chargers, had a .453 batting average, 24 hits, four doubles and 17 stolen bases this season while going 3-4 on the mound with a 3.14 ERA in 42 1/3 innings of work. He also added two triples, 12 RBIs and 23 runs scored on offense while striking out 31 from the mound and allowing 29 walks and 33 hits. He was named to the Tomahawk All-Conference Team this year as well.

Landon Strong, Sr., Sleepy Eye

Strong wrapped up a strong senior season with a .412 batting average and 28 hits. The Tomahawk All-Conference player also had a home run this year, six doubles, one triple and 11 RBIs. He finishes his career with a .425 career batting average, 77 hits, 10 doubles, a triple, three homers and 34 RBIs.

Sleepy Eye head coach Aaron Nesvold said that Strong was a “heck of a hitter” that led the team in hits the last two seasons and rarely walked or struck out.

Second Team

Jaden Domeier, Sr., New Ulm

Domeier finished the regular season of his senior campaign with a .366 batting average, 18 runs scored and 12 stolen bases. He also tossed four innings with five strikeouts and was one of the top fielders on the Eagles, patrolling center field and being described by head coach Kevin Briggs as a “gold glove center fielder.” He was a Big South All-Conference player this season.

Josh Seidl, Sr., Cathedral

Seidl, the Greyhounds’ senior catcher, finished his final season with a .365 batting average and 27 hits. He also drove in 17 runs and scored 17 runs while walking 13 times and stealing eight bases.

Aside from his offensive output, Seidl was looked at by head coach Bob Weier as an important leader on the defensive side also. The school record-setting catcher finishes his career with 109 hits, 62 RBIs and a .395 batting average.

Henry Scheitel, Jr. Springfield

Scheitel, an All-Conference and All-Section player, was one of the Tigers’ most relied on pitchers this season and he more than made his mark from the mound. Pitching 49 1/3 innings, Scheitel struck out 28 and had a 1.84 ERA. He allowed five walks and 55 hits and forced 65 groundouts.

He also hit .268 this season with 19 hits, three doubles and 15 RBIs.

Logan Anderson, Sr., Madelia

Anderson finished an All-Conference senior year with a .453 batting average and a 1.14 ERA from the mound. He was one of the Blackhawks’ top pitchers, going 6-2 with 99 strikeouts in 61 1/3 innings on the mound.

He was also one of the team’s top hitters, adding 15 RBIs, 24 hits, 15 runs scored, six doubles, two triples and two homers.

Jacob Berg, Sr.,

Sleepy Eye

Berg finished his senior campaign with a 2.64 ERA, 48 strikeouts, eight walks allowed and a 4-3 record in 44 2/3 innings this year. The All-Conference, All-Section player was 4-3 and also hit .290 this season with 16 hits, six doubles and 15 RBIs.

Sleepy Eye head coach Aaron Nesvold said that Berg was a huge piece of the Indians’ state tournament run a year ago, where he pitched a no-hitter in the section playoffs. Berg also had a 1-0 complete-game win against Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey this season.

A member of the All-Journal Second Team last season, he ends his career with a 12-4 over 107 innings, striking out 99 batters with 29 walks allowed and a 1.83 ERA. He also has 39 career hits and a .256 career batting average.

Nick Labat, Jr., SESM

Labat ended his junior season with a .333 batting average, two home runs, 12 stolen bases, 12 RBIs, 19 runs scored and 20 hits. He also pitched for the Knights and had a 4.16 ERA in 32 innings of work while allowing 26 hits, 30 walks and striking out 57. He finished the year with a 3-2 record on the mound.

The Tomahawk All-Conference player has a career .383 average and 79 total hits.

Braden Zimmerman, Sr., New Ulm

Zimmerman ended the regular season with a .323 batting average, 20 hits and 12 runs scored for the offense. He also pitched 27 2/3 innings and struck out 20 with a 3.80 ERA. He was named an honorable mention by the Big South Conference this season.

Dylan Maiers, Jr., BLHS

Maiers went 5-2 in 45 1/3 innings on the mound for BLHS this season with 51 strikeouts and a 1.39 ERA. He also allowed just 12 walks and 23 hits.

Offensively, Maiers hit .304 with six RBIs, 17 hits and 13 runs scored. BLHS head coach Dylan Gass called Maiers an outstanding leader that was very focused and an “ace on the mound for the third year in a row.”

Teagan Kamm, Jr.,

New Ulm

Kamm was a .339 hitter on the season and had 20 hits, 11 RBIs, 11 runs scored and five stolen bases heading into playoffs. He also tossed 18 innings with a 2.30 ERA.

Described by his head coach Kevin Briggs as a true gamer that can play all nine positions, Kamm was one of New Ulm’s top clutch hitters this season. He was also named an honorable mention by the Big South Conference this year.

No nominations were received from Wabasso or Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.
