NEW ULM — New Ulm Legion Gold pounded out 32 hits and scored 29 runs as they swept Mankato National 18-0 and 11-2 Monday night in an American Legion baseball doubleheader.

The first game was stopped in the fourth inning because of the 10-run lead rule.

“We hit the ball well which was nice to see coming off a loss yesterday,” Gold coach Chris Peters said “We had a combined 32 hits today and everybody seemed to hit the ball for us. Good things happen when you put the ball in play.”

In the opener, Braden Zimmerman got the win as he scattered three National hits.

Jaden Domeier and Colton Schaefer led the 19-hit attack with four hits each. Also for Gold, Hunter Ranweiler added three hits, while Zimmerman drove in four runs.

Gold scored a run in the first and then added four more in the second thanks to two National errors.

New Ulm then blew the game wide open in the third and fourth innings with six and seven runs respectively.

In Game 2, Colton Schaefer got the win for New Ulm.

He held the National bats to six hits.

Aaron Portner led the 13-hit attack with three hits, with Jaden Domeier, Josh Seidl and Braden Zimmerman each collecting two hits.

Domeier and Zimmerman each drove in two runs.

Gold sent 11 men to the plate in the second inning when they pushed seven runs across on eight hits before adding three more runs in the fifth on no hits but took advantage of six walks in the inning.

Gold plays again in tournament action Friday in St. Cloud. They first play Anoka at 11:15 a.m. before taking on Waite Park at 1:30 p.m.
