ATHLETE OF THE WEEK • June 9-June 15

Glavine Schugel

Jr. New Ulm High School

Son of Brad and Angie Schugel

• Last week at the 2019 Class AA Boys’ State Golf Meet in Jordan at Ridges at Sand Creek, Schugel finished tied for fourth overall after a two-day score of 149. It was the highest finish he’s had at state after a sixth-place finish in 2018.

New Ulm head coach Dan Janke said that Schugel was persistent at state this season and rose to the challenge.

“Glavine’s performance at the state tournament was not as dominating as he often has been but it was persistent,” Janke said. “The golf course is set up in a way that challenges every aspect of the players’ game. He really rose to the challenge of the course, showing off his strength in his driving accuracy and distance as well as great iron play. … One great improvement in Glavine’s golf ability is his attitude. To play as well as he did and have that many close shots that could have made his score even better did not discourage him, and he kept a very positive attitude which held together a still very impressive performance against a field of great golfers.”
