Windmill Classic: James Gang defeats New Ulm

NEW ULM — The James Gang defeated New Ulm 16/U 3-1 in the Windmill Classic Softball Tournament championship on Sunday.

The James Gang scored all of its runs in the top of the second inning. One player reached on a bunt and moved to second on another bunt. An infield single scored a James Gang player for its first run. Another player scored on a single. A James Gang scored its final run.

New Ulm had a big chance to score in the fifth inning. New Ulm loaded the bases, but the James Gang defense threw out two runners at home plate when a player put the ball in play. An error scored Anna Lee for New Ulm’s lone run.

The James Gang was able to keep New Ulm’s offense in check and win the championship.

Miranda Suess took the loss. She pitched six innings, gave up three runs on five hits, had no walks and had two strikeouts.

Emily Schommer, Suess and McKenna Simpson had one hit apiece for New Ulm in the championship game.

“We had great pitching all day, but we came up short in the end,” New Ulm head coach Don Deslauriers said.

New Ulm earned its berth in the championship contest with an 8-3 win over St. Peter in fourh innings earlier on Sunday.

St. Peter led 1-0 early. Megan Haala’s single scored Miranda Suess to tie the game in the second inning.

St. Peter regained the lead when it scored two runs in the fourth inning for a 3-2 lead. New Ulm erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fourth for the win. An error scored Lily Franta, who had walked earlier to tie it at 3-apiece. New Ulm took advantage of some St. Peter errors. New Ulm got a run on an out.

Franta stepped to the plate and she belted a triple to center field which scored New Ulm’s final two runs.
