New Ulm 16s go 2-1 on first day of NU Windmill Classic

NEW ULM — Despite a slow start to the day, the New Ulm 16s finished the day strong.

The 2-1 record earned New Ulm the No. 2 seed in the 16/18 bracket, which begins on Sunday morning.

New Ulm 16-U dropped the opener 2-1 to St. James, but came back to defeat St. Peter 4-2 and then finished the day with an 8-0 victory over St. Louis Park.

In the opening game, New Ulm got an early run but it missed out on a chance to score in the fourth inning after loading the bases but not scoring. The game ended after five innings due to the time limit.

Maddi O’Connor scored New Ulm’s lone run and she also had a stole base in the first game.

Miranda Suess took the loss. She pitched five innings and struck out five. She walked three and gave up five hits and two runs.

In the second game, Megan Haala earned the win. She struck out four and walked three. She allowed two hits and two runs.

Lily Franta had a hit that led to a run. Later, Emily Schommer had a two-run double that scored McKenna Simpson and O’Connor.

In the final game, New Ulm got a combined shutout effort from Suess and Haala. Suess pitched three innings, struck out four and walked none. Haala struck out four in two innings and didn’t walk anyone.

O’Connor, Franta and Simpson each had two runs scored for New Ulm in the final game. New Ulm is the No. 2 seed in the 16/18 bracket and will play No. 7 High Impact at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday at New Ulm High School.
