Prep roundup: Fenger homers 4 times for Rabbits in pair of 3A playoff wins Thursday; River Valley, MVL, GFW compete in Subsections Thursday

SLAYTON — Wabasso dominated Adrian in an 11-1 five-inning win on Thursday before moving on to down Murray County Central 11-8, moving the Rabbits on in the winner’s bracket of the Section 3A softball playoffs.

The No. 3-seeded Rabbits will now take on top-seeded Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg at 12:15 p.m. Saturday in Marshall.

In the first game of the day for the Rabbits on Thursday, Allison Fenger hit three home runs with four RBIs, while Megan Rothmeier went 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Also for Wabasso in Game 1, Kelsey Frank added a pair of hits, Jenna Frank had a double and Halle Huhnerkoch had a single.

In Game 2 against MCC, Fenger had another home run, a two-run homer, while Huhnerkoch and Cassidy Irlbeck had a pair of hits each. Jenna Frank and Rothmeier added a double each, while Baily Hastings singled.

Sarah Franta got the win for the Rabbits in both games.

Prep track and field

River Valley competes in Subsections at St. James on Thursday

ST. JAMES — In the Section 2A, Subsection 6 Track and Field Championships on Thursday, the River Valley girls took fifth with 102 points and the River Valley boys finished seventh with 32 points.

Leading the way for the River Valley girls was Sophie Gustafson, who finished third in the 100-meter hurdles in 19 seconds and second in the 300 hurdles (53.74). Also for the River Valley girls, Erika Wells took third in the 100-meter dash (14.09), Sydney Hauger took second in the 400 (1:03:48), Lilly McCone took second in the 800 (2:33.62) and Abby Hagen took second in the 1,600 (5:37.49). The girls’ 4×800-meter relay team and the 4×400 relay team finished second (10:12.10) and third (4:28.57), respectively.

Hali Soukup took fourth in the triple jump (31-02).

For the River Valley boys, James Hagen took second in the 100-meter wheelchair dash (48.10) and second in the wheelchair shot put (5-03), while Jose Ibarra took second in the 400 (52.48). Kadin Johnson took fourth in the 100 (12.17).

The top four individuals in each event and top two teams in each relay event advance to the Section Meet at Mankato West on June 1.

MVL, GFW compete at Subsections in Belle Plaine on Thursday

BELLE PLAINE — The Minnesota Valley Lutheran and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop track and field teams competed in Section 2A, Subsection 7 Track and Field Championships on Thursday, with the MVL girls finishing third (130), the MVL boys taking fourth (76.16) and both GFW teams taking seventh.

For the MVL girls, Mara Weisensel took second in the 100-meter hurdles (16.25) and third in the high jump (5-0), while Emma Nelson took first in the shot put (35-01) and Abby Nelson took third in the 800 (2:28.98). Also for the MVL girls, Lexi Fosburgh took first in the 100 (13.29) and third in the 200 (27.67), while Naomi Anderson took fourth in the 400 (1:06.82), Hannah Marzinske took third in both the triple jump (33-04.25) and the long jump (15-09) and Mia Johnson took third in the 3,200 (12:10.88).

The MVL girls’ 4×100 relay team consisting of Fosburgh, Megan Seidl, Anna Schwartz and Marzinske took second (52.60).

For the GFW girls, Grace Feder took first in the 3,200 (11:46.59), Carly Thompson took second in the 100 (13.40) and Olivia Schwarzrock took second in the discus (106-10).

For the MVL boys, Izayah Harrison took second in the 100 (11.32) while Christian Edwards finished fourth (11.70). The boys’ 4×100 relay team consisting of Zach Helget, Harrison, Edwards and Carlos Ramirez finished first (45.08).

Sam Muske took third in the 200 (24.25), while Trent Fluegge took fourth in the pole vault (10-03). Jake Kettner finished third in the long jump (19-10) and tied for third in the high jump (5-06).

For the GFW boys, Tylor Hopp and Treay Taylor took third (38-04) and fourth (37-07.5), respectively, in the triple jump, while McKray Schmidt took second in the discus (129-0).

The top four individuals in each event and top two teams in each relay event advance to the Section Meet at Mankato West on June 1.

New Ulm girls take 1st, boys 2nd at Hutchinson Relays Thursday

HUTCHINSON — The New Ulm girls’ track and field team took first (205) out of three teams in the Hutchinson Relays on Thursday, while the boys’ team took second (188).

For the New Ulm girls, Olivia Owens took first in the high jump (5-02) and second in the triple jump (32-10.75), while Olivia Wick took second in the discus (86-05) and third in the shot put (27-09). Also for New Ulm, Kelsi Miller took second in the shot put (29-09) and third in the triple jump (31-03.5), Paige Kalis took first in the long jump (15-07.75), Kaye Rysdahl took second in the 1,600 (5:45.69), Erika Ebert took second in the pole vault (8-0) and Malia Wagner took third in the pole vault (7-06).

The girls’ 4×100 relay A team (52.51), the 800 sprint medley A team (2:03.22) and the 1,600 sprint medley A team (4:40.44) all took first for the New Ulm girls.

For the New Ulm boys, Jack Howard took second in the long jump (18-04), Carson Giefer took third in the triple jump (36-02), Jackson Hillesheim took third in the discus (115-02) and Logan Kletscher took third in the pole vault (9-06). The boys’ 4×100 relay A team also took first (46.18).
