Prep roundup: Schugel finishes 3rd at Big South Conference golf meet

FAIRMONT — The New Ulm boys golf team finished third at the Big South Conference Golf Meet with a team score of 355.

Blue Earth Area won on the boys side.

Glavine Schugel led the way for the Eagles with a 78. Schugel finished third overall. Also for New Ulm, Aiden Guggisberg shot a 89, Josh Gulden shot a 93 and Sam Gieseke shot a 95.

Cathedral girls 482, Springfield inc., Cedar Mountain inc.

MORTON — The Sleepy Eye United boys took first in a Tomahawk Conference golf quadrangular.

Springfield’s Mason Kretsch and Mavrick Winkelmann and Sleepy Eye’s Thor Weiss each shot a 77 and shared medalist honors.

Cedar Mountain was led by Chase Schiller, who shot a 81.

Wabasso’s Justin Bernardy shot a 91.

For the girls, the medalist was Cathedral’s Kayla Goblirsch, who shot a 89.

Springfield’s Mackenzie Lothert shot a 97. Shaylee Schiller shot a 112 for Cedar Mountain.

MVL 11, MCW 2

SHERBURN — Minnesota Valley Lutheran defeated Martin County West 11-2 on Monday in a nonconference baseball game.

The winning pitcher was MVL’s Matthew Rieger, who had four strikeouts and allowed two hits and two runs.

Kevin Sanders took the loss for Martin County West giving up two hits, two runs and three walks.

MVL’s Mason Cox went 3 for 5 with one run scored and two RBIs, Josh Giefer went 2 for 3 with one run scored and two RBIs and Owen Rich went 1 for 3 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Cathedral 6, Cleveland 0

CLEVELAND — New Ulm Cathedral’s Mark Schommer threw a three-hit shutout as the Greyhounds defeated Cleveland in a nonconference baseball game on Monday.

Schommer struck out 11 and didn’t walk a batter. Chris Knowles was 2 for 3 with a run and a stolen base and Noah Wilmes was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Sam Knowles was 1 for 2 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

Springfield 6, Minneota 5

MINNEOTA — Springfield defeated Minneota 6-5 on Monday in a nonconference baseball game.

The winning pitcher was Springfield’s Hunter Mathiowetz, who had eight strikeouts and allowed one walk.

Springfield was led in hitting by Decker Scheffler, who went 3 for 4 with one run scored and two RBIs, Isaac Fink, who went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and Mathiowetz, who went 2 for 4 with one run scored.

Cathedral 16, Cleveland 2

CLEVELAND — New Ulm Cathedral defeated Cleveland 16-2 on Monday in a nonconference softball game.

The winning pitcher was Cathedral’s Josie Pautzke, who allowed nine hits.

The losing pitcher was Cleveland’s McKenna Raab, who had two strikeouts and gave up 11 hits, 10 runs and two walks.

Lily Franta went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and two doubles for Cathedral. Also for Cathedral, Lauryn Franta went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Shay Ubl went 2 for 2 with an RBI and a double.
