SLEEPY EYE — Minnesota Valley Lutheran celebrated a pair of Tomahawk Conference titles following Thursday’s Tomahawk Conference Track and Field Meet at Sleepy Eye High School as its girls’ and boys’ team each dominated to finish first.

The MVL girls finished with 163 points ahead of River Valley (79), Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (67) and Wabasso (34). The MVL boys finished with 171 points ahead of GFW (81), River Valley (65) and Wabasso (44).

Leading the MVL girls was Hannah Marzinske, who finished first in the triple jump with a distance of 32 feet, 3 1/4 inches, first in the long jump (16-0 1/4) and second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.106 seconds behind teammate Lexi Fosburgh’s first-place time of 27.94. Marzinske was also named the girls’ athlete of the meet.

Mara Weisensel also had a solid day for the Chargers after finishing first in the 100-meter hurdles (16.66) and first in the high jump (4-10).

“The girls have been doing a great job all year,” MVL head coach Rollin Timm said. “I think the only meet where we didn’t finish first was the New Ulm meet, where we finished third to Mankato West and Fairmont, which are two very big schools. We’ve had a great team all the way around.”

The MVL girls next compete in the True Team Meet at Stillwater on Saturday. Emma Nelson and Mara Weisensel are both coming off of recent injuries, but Timm said that the depth the girls’ team has is amazing and he’s looking for better results this year.

The River Valley girls were led by Abby Hagen, who finished first in the 1,600 (5:50.49) and Lilly McCone, who took first in the 800 (2:31.68). Grace Feder of GFW won another race this year after taking first in the 3,200 (12:13.23), while Ana Feder took first in the 300 hurdles (53.12).

The MVL boys were led by track and field newcomer and senior Jake Kettner, who took first in the high jump (5-6), second in the triple jump (37-4) and second in the long jump (18-9 1/2).

Zach Helget was also a standout for the MVL boys, finishing first in the 200 (24.11) and second in the 100 (11.57), with teammate Izayah Harrison finishing first in the 100 (11.52).

Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop’s Tyler Hopp finished as the top boys’ athlete at the meet, finishing first in both the triple jump (37-10 1/4) and the long jump (19-8 1/2) while finishing second in the 200 (24.84). River Valley’s Jose Ibarra was another standout athlete at the meet, taking first in the 400 (52.74) and first in the 800 (2:20.43).

After watching both of his team’s take home conference titles, coach Timm couldn’t help but smile. His overall final thoughts after the meet were brief, but they summed up how fortunate the program was.

“We’re just blessed,” Timm said. “Blessed with a great group of kids.”
