Chargers roll past Raiders, 8-3

NEW ULM — Minnesota Valley Lutheran scored in every inning but one and picked up its third win of the season, defeating Nicollet 8-3 in a nonconference baseball game on Monday at Johnson Park.

The Chargers won despite committing four errors in the contest.

Matt Rieger pitched four innings to get the win for the Chargers. He allowed seven hits and three runs and he struck out three. Leyton Brau pitched the final three innings to earn the save.

Riley Hulke pitched 3 1/3 innings and took the loss for the Raiders. He gave up four runs on six hits. He came in for starter Logan Shay, who lasted just 2/3 of an inning and gave up two runs on two hits.

The Chargers scored two runs in the bottom of the first, with an RBI single going to Teddy Giefer to put the Chargers ahead 2-0. Owen Rich also scored on an error in the inning for the game’s first run.

MVL tacked on a single run in the second inning, with Mason Cox delivering a two-out hit to make it 3-0.

The Raiders tied the game in the third inning, scoring three times before the Chargers re-took the lead in the bottom of the third.

Brau drove in two runs in the third with a two-run double and the Chargers added another run in the fourth after Giefer drove in Mason Cox to make it 6-3. MVL scored twice more in the fifth for the final 8-3 margin.

For the Chargers, Owen Rich was 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Brau was 2 for 5 with two RBIs and Cox was 2 for 4. Giefer was 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Anthony Macias was 2 for 3 for the Raiders.

MVL is at Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart on Tuesday.
