Northwestern sweeps Martin Luther College in softball

ST. PAUL — The Martin Luther College softball team lost both games of its doubleheader at University of Northwestern-St. Paul by the scores of 4-3 and 5-1 on Thursday.

UNW 4, MLC 3

Northwestern overcame a two-run deficit late in game one and walked off with a 4-3 win.

The Knights built and early 3-0 lead thanks to a two-run home run by Brittany Denn in the first inning and an unearned run in the second.

The Eagles still trailed 3-1 late in the game, but scored once in the sixth and twice more in the seventh to win the game in their final at bat.

Rebecca Pruss (5-5) went the distance for MLC, allowing all four runs on nine hits in defeat. Denn finished with two of the Knights’ five hits and drove in two of the three runs. Her home run was her third this season.

UNW 5, MLC 1

The Knights fell behind early and couldn’t get the bats going the rest of the way in a 5-1 defeat in game two.

UNW scored five runs in the first four innings off MLC starting pitcher Morgan Palubicki (1-12) to take a commanding lead. Elena Hoffman put the Knights on the scoreboard in the seventh inning with her sixth home run of the season, but that was all the offense the Knights could muster as the Eagles closed out the four-run win.

Palubicki pitched the first five innings and allowed all five runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out three. Kayla Rosenbaum’s single in the third inning was the only MLC hit before Hoffman’s homer in the seventh frame.

MLC fell to 7-17 on the season and 3-9 in UMAC play following the two defeats. UNW improved to 17-14 overall and 7-5 in league play with the sweep.

The Knights will return to action on Tuesday, April 23, when they host Crown College in a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
