Steel lose to N. Iowa Bulls

NEW ULM — Brendan Studioso’s shootout goal lifted the North Iowa Bulls to a 5-4 win over the New Ulm Steel Sunday afternoon at the New Ulm Civic Center.

Jordan Cooper had two goals for the Steel, with Brian Oare and Jake Ford adding scores.

Hunter Johnson and Keegan Baumann each had two assists.

New Ulm goalie Henry Baribeau stopped 38 of 43 shots.

Despite the loss in the shootout, Steel coach Andrew Kolb was pleased with the play of his team that earned five out of a potential six points over the weekend.

“You look at your schedule going into the weekend, and we put some numbers out there about what you want to accomplish,” he said. “We talked about getting five out of six points. It was not going to be easy by any means.”

New Ulm got four points when they swept Alexandria Friday and Saturday and then had to battle back from deficits of 3-1 and 4-2 in the third period to force overtime.

Cooper’s second goal of the game at the 5:01 mark pulled the Steel to within 4-3 before Cooper knotted the game just over 10 minutes later to force overtime.

No team scored in the extra session before the Bulls’ Studioso won it in a shootout.

Kolb said that with the point for overtime, the Steel hold a two-point lead over Alexandria. “Now we control our own fate.”
