Prep Roundup: St. Mary’s tops GFW, picks up 2nd straight win, Waseca boys crush New Ulm

St. Mary’s 74, GFW 67

WINTHROP — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 74-67 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game.

Nick Labat scored 18 points and Carson Domeier scored 17 points for St. Mary’s.

Johnnie Ambrose led GFW, scoring 15 points. Also for GFW, Damian Hopp and Ryan Lavrenz both scored 12 points.

GFW (1-5) plays at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Belle Plaine. St. Mary’s hosts Mountain Lake Area at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Waseca 90, New Ulm 46

WASECA — Waseca defeated New Ulm 90-46 on Tuesday in a Big South Conference boys’ basketball game.

Braden Zimmerman scored 12 points and Reece Melby scored 10 points for New Ulm.

New Ulm (3-8) hosts Fairmont at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Sibley East 56, TCU 45

ARLINGTON — Sibley East defeated Tri-City United 56-45 on Tuesday in a Minnesota River Conference boys’ basketball game.

Sibley East leading scorers were Caleb Dose, who scored 17 points and Lucas Dose, who scored 12 points.

Sibley East plays at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Le Sueur-Henderson.

Girls’ basketball

Wabasso 72, Cedar Mountain 14

MORGAN — Wabasso defeated Cedar Mountain 72-14 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

Wabasso was led by Madison Guetter, who scored 16 points and Sarah Franta, who scored 14 points.

Kalli Kodet scored 5 points for Cedar Mountain. Madison Heiling had five rebounds.

Wabasso hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Cedar Mountain (2-11) plays at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Sleepy Eye.

Springfield 60,

Sleepy Eye 59

SLEEPY EYE — Springfield defeated Sleepy Eye 60-59 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

Sydney Hauger led Springfield, scoring 27 points. Taylor Augustin scored 12 points.

Sleepy Eye was led by Macy Schenk, who scored 14 points. Also for Sleepy Eye, Brittney Dittbenner had 12 points, Madi Krueger had 11 points, six rebounds and five assists and Paige Romberg had 9 points.

Springfield (6-5, 4-3) hosts Redwood Valley at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Sleepy Eye (4-8, 0-6) plays Cedar Mountain at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in Morgan.

Boys’ hockey

New Ulm 7,

Redwood Valley 0

REDWOOD FALLS — New Ulm defeated Redwood Valley 7-0 on Tuesday in a boys’ hockey game.

Glavine Schugel and Jace Addy each scored 2 goals for New Ulm. Kyle Tauer and AJ Arneson each had 1 goal and one assist. Hunter Hulke also scored a goal for the Eagles. Braxton Hoffman had three assists and Kadon Strong and Ryan Esser each had one assist.

Jack Raymond had 16 saves for New Ulm.

New Ulm (9-5-1, 7-1) hosts Marshall at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
