Prep roundup: Cathedral girls roll past Madelia, MVL boys top Wabasso

Cathedral 62, Madelia 53

MADELIA — New Ulm Cathedral defeated Madelia 63-53 on Tuesday in a nonconference girls’ basketball game.

Cathedral was led by Lauryn Franta, who scored 18 points. McKenna Miling scored 12 points and Heidi Hoffman scored 11 points for Cathedral.

Madelia was led by CaleyAnn Clobes with 15 points, while Sylvia Rodriguez added 12.

Cathedral (2-1) plays at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop. Madelia hosts Mountain Lake Area at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

GFW 53, Sleepy Eye 31

SLEEPY EYE — Grace Swenson scored 15 points as Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop topped Sleepy Eye in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game on Tuesday.

Miah Busse had 9 points for GFW.

Sleepy Eye was led by Paige Romberg, who had 7 points and Miah Brown added 6 points.

GFW is 1-1 (1-0) and hosts New Ulm Cathedral on Friday. Sleepy Eye is 1-4 (0-2) and hosts Red Rock Central on Friday

St. Mary’s 65, Springfield 54

SPRINGFIELD — Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s defeated Springfield 65-54 on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference girls’ basketball game.

St. Mary’s leading scorer was Madison Mathiowetz, who scored 30 points. Cassie Heinrichs also scored 13 points for St. Mary’s.

Sydney Hauger scored 15 points and Mackenzie Lothert scored 14 points for Springfield.

Springfield (2-1) hosts Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. St. Mary’s plays at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Nicollet/Mankato Loyola.

Cedar Mountain 41

MORGAN — Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther defeated Cedar Mountain 59-41 on Tuesday in a nonconference girls’ basketball game.

Chasyti Pendleton led Cedar Mountain with 12 points. Also for Cedar Mountain, Megan Trebesch had 10 points and Trista Smith had seven rebounds.

Cedar Mountain (0-3) plays at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s

Prep wrestling

NUA goes 2-1 at East

MANKATO — New Ulm Area went 2-1 at the Mankato East quadrangular on Tuesday.

NUA defeated Mankato East 32-27, lost to Maple River 42-24 and defeated St. Clair 54-12.

Sean Howk (145), Cole Ranweiler (152) and Colby Wenninger (285) went 3-0 for the Eagles on the day.

NUA hosts Fairmont on Friday.

Boys’ basketball

MVL 70, Wabasso 36

WABASSO — Minnesota Valley Lutheran had no problem with Wabasso on Tuesday in a Tomahawk Conference boys’ basketball game.

Jake Kettner led the way with 17 points and six rebounds and Dunwa Omot had 16 points. Mason Cox finished with 11 points for the Chargers.

Mason Dallenbach led Wabasso with 8 points and Isaac Kronback had 7 points.

MVL plays Winnebago Lutheran at 8:15 p.m. on Friday at the MLC tip-off tournament.

St. James 78, Nicollet 60

NICOLLET — St. James defeated Nicollet in prep boys’ basketball action on Tuesday.

Eric Fischer led the Raiders with 13 points and Anthony Macias finished with 12 points. Riley Hulke had 10 points and 11 assists.

Nicollet hosts Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Thursday.

LP/HT 53, Sibley East 48

ARLINGTON — Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity topped Sibley East 53-48 in nonconference boys’ basketball action on Tuesday.

Kameron In led East with 14 points, while Lucas Dose added 12 points.

Madelia 76, HLO 51

OKABENA — Madelia crushed Heron Lake-Okabena on Tuesday night 76-51 in nonconference boys’ basketball action.

Ja’Sean Glover had 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Blackhawks, while Dain Uhde added 14 points. Kurt Lugo had 12 points for Madelia, while Ramiro Zamora added 7 points and six steals.

Madelia (2-0) next hosts Fulda on Tuesday.
