Prep roundup: Wabasso, Cathedral earn wins, New Ulm boys’ soccer team ends season with a loss

WABASSO — Wabasso defeated Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 25-8, 25-17, 25-13 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.
Maddy Guetter had 13 digs and 19 kills for Wabasso. Mckenna Nelson had 14 digs and five kills, Jenna Frank had 29 set assists and two blocks and Amanda Hoffman had eight kills and three blocks.
Abby Heimkes had five kills for GFW and Jordan Rettig had seven set assists. Miah Busse and Hannah Panitzke had seven digs.
Wabasso (21-4, 8-0) hosts Russell-Tyler-Ruthton at 7 p.m. on Monday. GFW plays on Friday at the Jimmy John’s invitational in Marshall.
Cathedral 3, St. Mary’s 0
SLEEPY EYE — New Ulm Cathedral defeated Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 25-20, 25-14, 25-19 on Thursday in a Tomahawk Conference volleyball match.
Sarah Mohr had 16 kills and 12 digs for Cathedral. Karlie Gieseke had 33 set assists and 19 digs, Lily Franta had 25 digs, Maggie Fliszar had 14 digs and Mary Herzog had 13 kills.
Cathedral (15-9) hosts Alden-Conger at 7 p.m. on Monday.
Boys’ soccer
SMC 3, New Ulm 0
EDGERTON — Southwest Minnesota Christian defeated New Ulm 3-0 on Thursday in a Section 2A boys’ soccer game.
Josh Rakoczy had 10 saves for New Ulm.
New Ulm finishes its season 7-10.
Prep cross-country
MADELIA — Springfield/Cedar Mountain competed at the Madelia invitational on Thursday.
Lilly McCone led the way for the girls, finishing in 21:15.
Leading the boys was Mitchell Buerkle, who finished in 17:05.
