NEW ULM — North Iowa scored two goals in the second period and again in the third period to break a 1-1 tie to go on to a 5-1 win over the New Ulm Steel Saturday night at the New Ulm Civic Center in a NA3HL game.

Pete Verstegen scored twice for the Bulls (3-1-0). Jack Giddings, Cam Fagerlee and Matt Rozman each added goals.

Cooper Hoheisel scored the lone goal for New Ulm (1-1-0). Deniss Berdniks added an assist.

Dysen Skinner stopped 41 of 42 New Ulm shots.

Steel goalie Henry Baribeau stopped 29 of 34 Bulls’ shots.

North Iowa got on the board less than a minute into the game when the Steel could not clear the puck and Verstegen pushed the puck by Baribeau just 31 seconds into the game.

The Steel tied the game at the 9:32 mark on Hoheisel’s goal.

But that was all that North Iowa and Skinner allowed.

Goals by Giddings and Fagerlee, with Fagerlee’s coming on the power play, moved the Bulls into a 3-1 lead after two periods.

Matt Rozman beat Baribeau at the 6:38 mark of the third period upped the lead to 4-1 before Verstegen’s second goal on a Bulls’ power play made the final 5-1 with less than two minutes left in the game.
